Is A Long Weekend Trip To Los Cabos Worth It? Here’s How To Make It Work In 2026

Share The Article

This is a seductive idea. You’re sitting at your desk on a Tuesday, look at the weather outside, and think, “I could be at The Cape by Friday.”

But having done this trip dozens of times, I need to give you a hard reality check. If you try to do a standard “Friday Night to Sunday Morning” trip (2 nights), you will return to work Monday more tired than when you started.

By the time you land, clear the “Shark Tank” at SJD, and drive the 40 minutes to the hotel, Friday is gone. You get one full day (Saturday) before you are packing up again Sunday morning. That is not a vacation; that is a high-stress commute with a view.

However, the “Long Weekend” (Friday to Monday) is the absolute sweet spot. By adding Monday to the itinerary, the math changes completely. You get two full days (Saturday and Sunday) of zero-stress sun, which is exactly enough time to reset your brain.

Here is the “Speed Protocol” to making a 72-hour Cabo trip actually feel like a vacation.

Rule 1: The “Airport Orbit” (Stay in Puerto Los Cabos)

On a short trip, every minute in a taxi is a minute wasted. You cannot afford to stay in Cabo San Lucas (45+ min drive) or the Pacific side (60+ min drive). You need to be in the “Airport Orbit.”

The Fix: You must stay in Puerto Los Cabos or the San Jose Hotel Zone.

JW Marriott Los Cabos: It is high-end, massive, and located in Puerto Los Cabos.

The Math: It is 20 minutes from SJD Airport. If you land at 11:00 AM, you are in the pool with a cocktail by 12:00 PM.

On the other hand, if you booked The Cape, you would be stuck in traffic for over an hour each way.

Rule 2: Carry-On Only (The Golden Rule)

This is non-negotiable for a 3-day trip. SJD airport is efficient, but baggage claim is the “Wild Card.” I have seen bags take 15 minutes, and I have seen them take 2 hours. Always go carry-on only.

The Fix: Pack two swimsuits, linen outfits for dinner, and sunscreen. Walk off the plane, breeze through the e-gates, and walk right past the carousel.

Rule 3: Pre-Book Private Transfer (The Shark Tank Defense)

Never, ever stop for a taxi in the airport hallway. This area is known as the “Shark Tank” for a reason. The “taxi drivers” inside are timeshare closers who will trap you in a 90-minute presentation just to get a ride.

The Fix: Book a private SUV transfer. They will be waiting outside at the umbrella bar with a cold beer. You get in, you go. It costs more than a shared shuttle but saves you 60 minutes of frustration and sales pitches.

Rule 4: The “One Big Thing” Itinerary

This is where most people ruin their weekend. They try to “make the most of it” by booking a tour to Todos Santos or a camel ride in the desert. Don’t do it.

The Reality: A trip to Todos Santos is a full day event. If you do that on a 3-day trip, you spent your entire vacation in a van. The Protocol: Rent a boat. Charter a private yacht for 4 hours on Saturday. It hits every major checklist item (The Arch, snorkeling, luxury) in one efficient block. Spend Sunday doing absolutely nothing at the pool.

Summary: The Math of the Long Weekend

  • Standard Weekend (Fri Night – Sun Morning): ~1 Day of usable relaxation time. (Stressful).
  • Long Weekend (Fri Morning – Mon Morning): ~2 Days of usable relaxation time. (Bliss).

Take the Monday off, skip the checked bag, pre-book the SUV, and it will be the best 72 hours of your year.

The Shark Tank experience is almost universally disliked. One assumes it provides revenue for the airport. What would be the financial and experiential impact of eliminating it all together?
