How Los Cabos Officials Plan To Cut Down Airport Transfer Times

Share The Article

Honesty moment… we at The Cabo Sun have all had that frantic, heart-pounding moment of checking the time, realizing our airport transfer is crawling through traffic, and whispering a desperate prayer that our flight is running late too.

If you’ve traveled through Los Cabos recently, you know the vibe—one minute you’re sipping margaritas by the beach, the next you’re in bumper-to-bumper traffic wondering if you should’ve just learned how to paraglide to the terminal.

Good news, though! There’s a big plan underway to help make that stressful last leg of your trip a whole lot smoother.

Los Cabos officials are stepping up to deal with the gridlock around the infamous Fonatur roundabout with a major infrastructure revamp.

And yes, it sounds promising—and very necessary, especially considering this road mess affects the 2.6 million tourists who visit the region each year, according to the Mexican Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).

🏧 So, What Exactly Are They Building?

The centerpiece of the project is a sleek new underpass that whisks traffic right beneath the madness of the Fonatur roundabout.

And it’s not just for looks. This is all about cutting down the choke point between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

Here’s what they’re putting together:

  • A 1.5 km underpass with four lanes (two in each direction) to keep traffic flowing.
  • A roundabout on top with actual traffic lights to avoid chaos.
  • A brand-new bike path circling the roundabout (3,000 square meters worth).
  • Tons of pedestrian upgrades: a new inclusive bridge, almost 20,000 square meters of sidewalks, and 17 crosswalks.
  • Even some eco touches: hundreds of local plants are being relocated, and nearly 24,000 square meters of green areas will be restored.

It’s not just a road fix—it’s a full-on glow-up for local mobility. And we’re here for it.

📅 When Will It Be Ready?

We wish we could say “by next weekend,” but hey, good things take time. The construction officially kicked off in May 2025 and is expected to take about 13 to 14 months. So, fingers crossed for a mid-2026 wrap-up.

Here’s the scoop:

  • Construction started: May 2025
  • Projected finish: June-ish 2026

While the finish line is still a ways off, at least we know it’s happening.

Los Cabos Tourist Alert: Depart For Airport Early Due To Traffic Congestion

🚧 What’s Being Done About Traffic Right Now?

Because we know your flight isn’t waiting until 2026.

Los Cabos isn’t just twiddling its thumbs during construction. Local officials are actively working to keep traffic headaches to a minimum (or at least not completely unbearable).

Here’s how they’re managing the current chaos:

  • Weekly coordination meetings (yes, with actual WhatsApp group chats) between city officials, police, emergency responders, and the construction company.
  • Evaluating traffic cameras for real-time monitoring and the ability to open up contraflow lanes during rush hours—think three lanes inbound in the morning, three outbound in the afternoon.
  • Actively updating a new online portal (movilidad.loscabos.gob.mx) to share traffic updates and alternative routes.
  • Deploying traffic cops and the National Guard to help steer the ship on the ground.

Is it perfect? Not yet. But it’s progress, and that’s a win in our book.

🚶️ What You Should Do in the Meantime

Until that underpass is ready to roll, the name of the game is preparation. We’ve learned this the hard way (looking at you, unexpected traffic jam).

So here’s what we recommend:

  • Leave way earlier than you think you need to for your airport trip.
  • Keep an eye on movilidad.loscabos.gob.mx and your favorite traffic app.
  • Stay flexible. Traffic flows can change day-to-day, hour-to-hour.
  • Look into alternate routes—they’re not always the scenic route, but they might save you serious stress.

And above all, don’t let a traffic jam ruin your final vacation vibes.

Throw on some music, grab an iced coffee, and just remind yourself that a faster, smoother ride is on the horizon. We’ll keep you posted every step of the way.

Here at The Cabo Sun, we’re rooting for your smooth departure—because the only thing worse than airport security lines is missing them entirely.
