Planning a trip to Los Cabos this summer? We’ve got some news you’ll want to know before you pack your bags.
There’s major road construction happening in San José del Cabo right now, and it’s causing some pretty hefty traffic delays. But don’t worry—we’ve got your back.
At The Cabo Sun, we’re keeping close tabs on the situation so you can plan ahead, avoid surprises, and make the most of your vacation. Because the only thing you should be stressed about on vacation is whether to hit the beach or the pool first.

🚦 Traffic Relief Update: Second Lane Now Open at Fonatur
First, good news!
As of May 31, a second lane has been opened through the Fonatur construction zone in San José del Cabo.
While traffic is still slow, it’s now flowing more steadily thanks to this update. Even better, a reversible center lane system will launch soon—flowing toward Cabo San Lucas in the morning and toward San José in the afternoon.
Drivers are urged to stay alert, follow signs carefully, and use alternate routes when possible.

🚧 What You Need to Know About the Fonatur Underpass Project
Since May 2025, major construction has been underway on a new underpass at the bustling Fonatur roundabout. This key infrastructure upgrade is aimed at easing long-term congestion, but for now, expect some traffic headaches.
Projected Completion: The work is expected to continue for approximately 18 months, wrapping up by late 2026.

✈️ How This Construction Impacts Your Travel
- Extended Airport Transfer Times: Airport trips between SJD and hotel zones can now take 2–3 hours. Build in extra time—especially during morning or late afternoon rush hours.
- Congestion on Alternate Routes: Even the toll road isn’t immune to the delays, as more drivers divert from the main highway.
- Risk of Missed Flights: Some travelers have already missed flights. Don’t let traffic steal your vacation finale!

🗺️ Navigating the Area: Understanding Detours
To ease congestion, authorities have opened four alternate detour routes via Arroyo Costa Azul. These can help bypass the worst of the construction zone, though they’re not perfect.
Detour Routes:
- Colinas Plus – Arroyo Costa Azul
- Monte Real – Arroyo Costa Azul
- Vista Hermosa – Arroyo Costa Azul
- G-20 – Arroyo Costa Azul
Heads-up: Some of these routes may be unpaved. If you’re in a standard rental car, drive carefully and consider if it’s the right route for you.
More information about alternative routes, including maps, can be found here.

🧳 Advice for Travelers: Minimizing Disruption
- Add Buffer Time: Leave 1.5 to 2 hours earlier than usual for airport trips.
- Call Ahead: Ask your hotel or transfer service for up-to-date traffic info and best routes.
- Use GPS Apps: Google Maps and Waze are your best friends right now.
- Stay Flexible: A good playlist and a chilled attitude go a long way when roads get rough.

🏨 What Local Businesses Are Saying
Local hoteliers and business owners are adjusting staff schedules and pushing for solutions like toll discounts.
Everyone’s working together to keep the Cabo experience as smooth as possible.
