Because of the wide variety of things to see and do in Los Cabos, every type of traveler visits for a different reason.
It might be the beaches, the luxurious all-inclusive resorts and hotels, the access to water activities, or the opportunity to explore nature, but what one Los Cabos local cultural specialist says most tourists don’t get the chance to experience is the real Cabo.
He thinks visitors should embrace the local culture, and there are seven ways that you can do that, and get to know the real Los Cabos.
Food Tours
Famous chef and food philanthropist Jose Andres once said that “food is memories,” so what better way to make a visit to Los Cabos more memorable than trying some local dishes?
Food tours run by locals are a fantastic way to do that, and there are plenty available.
They average around $80 per person for tours that you can book on Viator, and typically last around three hours, with several stops to try traditional dishes along the way.
Cooking Classes
By taking a cooking class, you can delve even deeper into the heart and soul behind some of the most time-honored Mexican culinary staples.
The hands-on experience with a local chef will also give you a better understanding of the cultural aspect of the dishes you prepare.
Cooking classes in Los Cabos, which you can book here, will run you around $100 per person, a small price to pay for such an authentic experience.
Tequila Tastings
Tequila, the unofficial national drink of Mexico, is a source of pride for the country’s people because so much care goes into making it.
A tequila tasting is a great way to start a Los Cabos vacation and celebrate Mexican culture.
Many tours in Los Cabos start or end with a tequila tasting. Many restaurants offer tequila tastings, or you can book a tour specifically dedicated to tasting different tequilas, which you can find for less than $50 per person.
Rural Town Visits
As cultural specialist Anibal Amador Castro pointed out, another great way to get to know the real Los Cabos is by visiting the region’s small rural towns.
El Triunfo, which is an old mining town, the organic farming community of Miraflores, and the sport fishing town of Los Barriles are all worth visiting for this reason.
Each is just a short drive from Los Cabos.
Local Events
Local events not only focus on cultural traditions, but they also allow you to mingle with the local people as well.
This gives you two opportunities to get to know the real Los Cabos through music, art, dance, and more.
Events are held in Los Cabos throughout the year that highlight some of the traditions that are important not just in Mexico as a whole, but to those that inhabit the Baja Peninsula as well.
Holiday Celebrations
There are few better ways to learn about a region’s culture than by participating in its holiday celebrations.
There are several holidays that are important to the Mexican people that are celebrated in Los Cabos.
Mexican Independence Day, Christmas, and Day of the Dead are the three most important, with several festivities for each.
Day Trips To Magic Towns And Neighborhoods
Last but not least, visiting the region’s Magic Towns and Magical Neighborhoods will give you a glimpse into what the locals view as special about where they live.
These towns are given this designation because they have preserved history or culture.
Part of San Jose del Cabo was just recently dedicated as a Magical Neighborhood and the Magic Town of Todos Santos is just an hour away from Los Cabos.
Both are well worth visiting during your Los Cabos vacation.
