If you visit Cabo regularly, you know that downtown San Lucas has a distinct personality. It is vibrant and energetic, but it can also feel a bit chaotic and, frankly, a little worn around the edges.
But if you walk through the city center this week, you might notice things looking a little tighter.
According to a new report, the City Council and the Port Administration (API) have launched a massive, coordinated “urban rehabilitation” blitz. This isn’t just a spring cleaning; it is part of a broader strategy to modernize the heart of the tourist district.
Here is what is changing on the streets of Cabo San Lucas and what it means for your night out.

The Immediate Facelift: Paint, Palms, and Sweepers
The latest push, described as the “second stage” of the maintenance program, is focused on high-visibility improvements.
- Visual Order: Crews are repainting the yellow curb zones designated for public transport and taxis. This might seem minor, but in a city where traffic can be confusing, clearly marked zones are crucial for “urban order.”
- Green Areas: The API (which manages the Marina) is deploying basket cranes to prune the massive palm trees that line the tourist corridor, as well as fixing masonry in public planters.
- The “Robot” Sweeper: You might see a new machine humming along the marina boardwalk. API BCS has deployed a new mechanical sweeper to automate trash collection, ensuring the walkways remain pristine despite the high foot traffic.

The Bigger Picture: Phase 1 Is In Motion
We have been tracking this transformation at The Cabo Sun since late 2025. This current cleanup aligns with the massive “Phase 1” infrastructure project we reported on last September.
While the current work is cosmetic (paint and pruning), it signals that the billion-peso revitalization plan is active. The long-term goal isn’t just to clean the streets, but to upgrade the lighting, widen sidewalks, and create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly grid that encourages tourists to walk deeper into the city, rather than just staying on the marina edge.

What This Means For You
- Better Photos: The “scruffy” look of downtown is getting polished. The pruned palms and fresh paint make a difference.
- Easier Transit: Clearly painted taxi and bus stops mean less confusion when you are trying to catch a ride back to your resort.
- Active Crews: You will see workers in vests along the 10-kilometer stretch of the main tourist zone. Give them a break; they are doing the hard work to make the city shine.

Have been in Cabo since beginning of December, yes have seen changes for the better, but one thing is sad, the passage under the bridge and the street going to the Riu hotels, is very very dirty full of garbage on each side of the road. At least should be cleaned up. Visitors to Cabo don’t like that.

Cabo San Lucas is now just about as expensive as Newport Beach California, so why not make it look that way?
