Canadian travelers are completely changing the landscape of Baja California Sur this year. While the Los Cabos International Airport has recently registered an overall decrease of just over 3% in its passenger flow, there is a massive bright spot coming from the north. The Canadian market is experiencing sustained, undeniable growth, registering an impressive 9.4% increase. This completely solidifies Canada as one of the absolute best-performing markets for the destination right now.

What is driving this massive wave of northern visitors? It all comes down to air routes. The General Director of the Los Cabos International Airport, Francisco Villaseñor, pointed out that the implementation of new routes has continued to drive this trend throughout 2026.
The Northern Boom
More and more flights have played a massive role in bringing Canadians down to the beach. Villaseñor noted that new commercial operators, such as Porter, are now flying into the destination, proving that the overall season is going very well. Furthermore, a major airline restructuring in Canada has actually worked out perfectly for Cabo.

- Restructuring Wins: Villaseñor highlighted that the restructuring with WestJet is showing highly positive results for the recovery of Canadian visitors.
- Major Returns: Even more exciting is the return of a major player; Air Transat has started operating large aircraft to the destination again after stopping flights six or seven years ago.
The addition of these operators gives Canadians more options than ever to trade the cold for the warm sands of Mexico.

Building Stronger International Ties
This surge in Canadian tourists is not just a happy accident. Behind the scenes, local authorities are working hard to make sure visitors from Canada feel incredibly secure and welcome.
Recently, officials from the 15th Municipal Government of Los Cabos held an official meeting at the Municipal Palace in San José del Cabo with the Canadian Ambassador to Mexico, Cameron MacKay. The primary goal of this diplomatic visit was simple: strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas like tourism, security, and institutional development.

The American Market Cooldown
While the Canadian market is on fire, the American side of the equation has cooled off just a bit. In terms of trade operations, the U.S. market actually experienced a slight 0.3% decline when compared to the numbers from 2025. While a fraction of a percent might not sound like a massive plunge, it is a noticeable shift for a destination that has relied heavily on record-breaking American crowds over the last few years.
However, local aviation leaders are making it very clear that there is no reason to sound the alarm. According to Villaseñor, the negative indicators in the overall passenger figures do not represent a sign of alarm. Instead, they are simply normal phenomena that all airport terminals eventually face based on the current social and economic contexts of the moment. Travel trends naturally ebb and flow, and after a massive rush of post-pandemic travel, it makes sense that the American market is experiencing a slight leveling off period.

Rolling Out The Red Carpet For The U.S.
Even though the numbers have stabilized, Los Cabos is not sitting back and letting the American market slip away. Tourism officials are actively rolling out the red carpet to bring U.S. travelers back down to the beach.
Rodrigo Esponda, the director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (FITURCA), has been highly proactive, explaining that the brief dip in passengers had absolutely nothing to do with the quality of services offered in the destination. The world-class resorts, stunning beaches, and incredible food are all operating at peak levels.

To get the momentum going again, promotional efforts are currently heavily focused on the southern United States. Regions like Texas, California, and Arizona have historically loved spending their summer months down in Baja, and Cabo is making sure those travelers feel the love more than ever before.

Furthermore, officials are making sure Americans know they will be incredibly secure during their stay. Local surveys confirm that travelers’ perceptions of safety and satisfaction remain incredibly high. According to the Travel Safety Index, Cabo San Lucas sits at a very high score of 94, showing the majority of travelers feel completely safe while visiting. With seamless flights, top-tier hospitality, and a massive promotional push, Los Cabos is working overtime to ensure Americans know the door is wide open for an unforgettable vacation.
