With the peak of the spring travel season officially here, Los Cabos is preparing to welcome thousands of national and international tourists for the Semana Santa (Holy Week) holiday. While the weather forecast is predicting perfect, sunny beach days, local authorities are issuing a strict warning regarding what is happening below the water’s surface.
The Los Cabos Civil Protection and Risk Management Directorate has officially urged all visitors to practice extreme caution when entering the ocean this week. Due to recent, highly volatile swell activity along the Baja coast, even the strongest swimmers are at risk of dangerous drag and undercurrents.
If you are planning to spend your vacation on the sand, here is everything you need to know about the current ocean warnings and how to safely navigate the beaches.

The Threat of the “Invisible” Current
The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez are incredibly beautiful, but they are also incredibly powerful. Francisco Cota Márquez, the acting head of Civil Protection, specifically highlighted that the current ocean conditions are generating deceptive and dangerous water movement.
- The Swell Factor: A swell is a massive wave that originates deep on the ocean floor. When it finally crashes onto the coast, it creates a massive, forceful drag that can easily knock you off your feet.
- The Undercurrents: Beneath the crashing waves, strong undercurrents are currently flowing along the seabed. These currents have the power to pull water—and swimmers—forcefully under the surface.
- Everyone Is at Risk: Authorities stressed that these specific conditions do not discriminate. The drag and undercurrents can affect absolutely anyone, regardless of their swimming skill level or physical fitness.

It Is Not Just For Swimmers
The Civil Protection warning extends far beyond just the people wading into the surf.
The volatile ocean conditions can also cause severe accidents for anyone operating a watercraft.
If you are planning to rent a jet ski, book a guided boat tour, or take any motorized vehicle out onto the water this week, you must exercise increased caution. The unpredictable swells can easily capsize small vessels or throw riders from their personal watercraft.

The Rules For A Safe Beach Day
To ensure the Holy Week holiday concludes without any tragic incidents, Civil Protection has outlined a strict set of behavioral guidelines for all beachgoers:
- Respect the Waves: If you arrive at the beach and see strong, crashing waves, do not enter the water.
- The Alcohol Rule: Never enter the ocean while intoxicated. The water currently demands your full physical and mental awareness.
- Wait to Swim: Do not jump into the ocean immediately after eating a heavy meal.
- Follow the Authorities: ZOFEMAT lifeguards will be actively monitoring the beaches. You must heed their instructions. If you see a red or black flag flying, the water is strictly closed to the public.

Know Your Beach Flags
One of the most critical ways to stay safe on the sand in Los Cabos is to understand and obey the local beach warning flag system. ZOFEMAT lifeguards will be actively monitoring the coastlines and updating the flags based on real-time conditions. Before you even unpack your towel, look for the colored flag flying on the beach:
- Green Flag: Water conditions are safe for swimming.
- Yellow Flag: Swim with extreme caution. There are moderate swells and currents present.
- Red Flag: High hazard. Conditions are dangerous, and swimming is strongly discouraged.
- Black Flag: The highest warning level. The beach and the water are completely closed to the public due to extreme danger.
- White Flag: Marine pests are present in the water (typically jellyfish).

A Massive Coordinated Effort
You will see a highly visible safety presence on the sand this week. A massive inter-institutional operation is currently underway, meaning the coastlines will be actively monitored by personnel from Civil Protection, Public Security, the Red Cross, the Fire Department, ZOFEMAT, and the Mexican Navy.
However, authorities reiterated that while they are deploying maximum resources to keep tourists safe, ultimate beach safety depends heavily on personal responsibility.
