The peak spring holiday travel season is now underway in Los Cabos, and according to the latest review by local officials, the beaches are in optimal condition to welcome tourists from all over the world.

Safety Review of Beaches

According to the official review by the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) and the State Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks, most public spas in the country and all of the local beaches were certified as safe for travelers.

Laboratory workers reviewed 289 popular tourist beaches throughout the entire country for the presence of enterococci.

Enterococci is generally known as fecal bacteria and can cause illness if beach swimmers enter the water with high levels of the bacteria.

Generally, bacteria levels of more than 200 enterococci/100 mL of beach water in a single test will cause a local health department in Mexico to close the beach.

“Among the various programs that we have within COFEPRIS, there is the clean beaches program in which we have 29 beaches monitored throughout the [State of Baja California Sur],” said an official report from the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks.

“We inform you that in the 234 recent evaluations that were carried out, all came out within the specifications that range from 0 to 200 enterococci per 100 milliliters. This means that the beaches of Baja California Sur are ready for recreational use for this Easter period.”

The public spas that failed the inspection for enterococci were outside of the State of Baja California Sur.

How Swimmers Are Warned

In Los Cabos, a black flag posted at a local beach is often an indication that the bacterial levels, especially levels of enterococci, are too high and the beach is closed for swimmers.

It is different than the posting of a red flag on a Los Cabos beach, which indicates that a beach is closed for swimming due to hazardous wave conditions on the beach.

If a beach in Los Cabos fails subsequent inspections, an appropriate black flag will be posted on the beach to promote tourist awareness.

It is usually due to rain runoff after a strong storm and is not expected to occur during the current peak spring holiday travel season.

Blue Flag Beaches

Many of Los Cabos beaches that travelers enjoy are actually held to an even higher standard, the internationally recognized Blue Flag standard. In fact, Los Cabos has the most Blue Flag certified beaches in North America.

According to the organization, a beach must achieve high standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety to earn the prestigious Blue Flag recognition.

This is the case for many of the beaches in Los Cabos, and the requirements exceed those for the minimal safety levels required by the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) and the State Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks.
