The capital city of Baja California Sur, La Paz, is only just over two hours from Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
The city is quite different from the well-known and much-loved Los Cabos and provides visitors with another option for exploring this stunning region.
This is why it has been gaining popularity among travelers, and some of this year’s spring break crowd is expected.
There are 5 reasons in particular why this charming city near Los Cabos is so popular this spring.
One Of The Best Beaches In The World
Los Cabos certainly does not lack spectacular beaches, but did you know that La Paz has one of the best beaches in the world?
Playa Balandra, also known as Balandra Beach, has received numerous awards over the last several years.
It’s been voted one of the best beaches in Mexico by Travel & Leisure, it also made it to number 10 on The World’s 50 Best Beaches List, and is the 12th best beach in the world according to TripAdvisor users.
Culture And History
It’s not surprising, considering it is the capital city of Baja California Sur, that there is a lot of history and culture to explore when visiting La Paz.
Along the charming streets, you’ll find plenty of options for delving into the fascinating story of the city.
Some of the most interesting places to visit are:
- The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History
- The Culture Center
- Our Lady of Peace Cathedral
- Statues Along the Malecon
- Nearby Villages of El Triunfo and San Antonio
Dining With A View
Another thing that La Paz is known for is its fantastic dining scene, which often comes with a view.
In addition to great restaurants that can be found throughout the city, there are several seaside dining locations too, many of which serve, guess what??
You guessed it, seafood, as the region is known for its fresh seafood, in addition to authentic Mexican food.
A Nature Lover’s Paradise
The lower portion of the Baja Peninsula might seem like it’s all sand and surf, not that that’s a bad thing, but there’s so much more to the region.
When visiting La Paz, you don’t have to go far to find it.
The Sierra de la Laguna mountains are only steps away, and within them are waterfalls, hot springs, and amazing hiking trails.
The Authentic Vibe
Strolling around La Paz, you can’t help but notice the old-world charm and authentic vibe throughout the city.
From the colorful buildings and Spanish colonial architecture to the smell of authentic Mexican food wafting through the air and the Mexican craft shops lining the streets, the city exudes an authentic vibe.
A visit to La Paz isn’t complete without taking a little time to explore this authentic side of the city.
La Paz Is Also Easily Accessible From Los Cabos
One of the things that helps contribute to the popularity of La Paz is how easily accessible it is.
La Paz does have its own airport, but currently, there are no direct flights to it from the U.S.
Being that it’s just over two hours from Los Cabos, though, you can fly into Los Cabos Airport, and Los Cabos is directly connected to 28 U.S. cities.
You’ll just have to pre-book transportation to get to La Paz from the airport.
The Laid-Back Atmosphere In La Paz
The laid-back atmosphere is another reason that the popularity of La Paz is on the rise.
It still hasn’t taken on that touristy persona, but rather one a city where everyday life is carried out daily.
This is why La Paz is a must-visit if you’re looking for a change from Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations.
