One of the many reasons leading so many Americans to choose Los Cabos for their holidays every year is that this municipality is constantly trying to improve its safety levels.
Always having to worry about your personal safety and belongings is not exactly the best way to relax after a long year spent working nine to five.
Luckily, tourists heading to Los Cabos can simply relax thanks to the many police officers working in this area.
Not by chance, a recent report shows how most people in Los Cabos trust the local police.
The report
According to a recent study by the General Directorate of Strategic Research of the Belisario Domínguez Institute of the Senate of the Republic (IBD), the levels of Mexican citizens’ trust in the state and municipal police have experienced a 20 percent increase from 2011 to 2023.
In particular, the state of Baja California Sur was ranked among the five best in the country.
The report was carried out by researchers Juan Manuel Rodríguez Carrillo and Miguel Ángel Barrón González and was based on data collected through the National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Safety.
The study titled ‘Some Aspects of the Police Forces Best Evaluated by Citizens’ reported that the population of Baja California Sur gave a 64.2% rating to their state police forces and 61.8% to their municipal police officers.
Unfortunately, however, the state of Baja California Sur was the only one among the top five in the country not providing its police officers with a salary equal to or above the monthly living wage proposed by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System and the National Minimum Wages Commission.
Constant improvement
One of the key reasons for such a high evaluation is the constant effort from the Los Cabos government to always improve its municipality’s safety levels.
Local authorities are regularly working on new initiatives to keep both locals and visitors safe at all times.
For instance, just a few days ago, it was announced that more inspectors would be added to Los Cabos’ main beaches to check whether all street vendors in the area are in possession of the right documentation.
According to local news, there are currently 695 legal vendors in the Los Cabos area. However, the people selling their services on the beach are way more.
In a recent interview, the Head of Municipal Fiscal Inspection, Luis Ovidio Marroquín Gómez declared: “We know that we have a fairly large influx on the beaches of our beautiful municipality. Especially on the beaches of Cabo San Lucas, in the Médano area, the regulation indicates 695 vendors (…).”
He then added: “[This number] has easily increased by approximately 200 percent. We are already reaching 2,000 street vendors who do not have regularization through the municipality.”
Thanks to this new initiative, the local police will be able to soon regularize most vendors operating on Los Cabos beaches, making sure none of the tourists here will get scammed.
But this is only one of the many programs recently put in place by the government to keep tourists safe. Los Cabos authorities recently took the decision to increase the number of troops operating on the Transpeninsular Highway.
This road is unfortunately known for being quite dangerous due to the high number of accidents that take place here daily.
Police will make sure all drivers respect the speed limits, which were recently decreased from 90 km/h to 60 km/h while carrying out controls.
The Transpeninsular Highway is one of the busiest roads in Los Cabos as it connects the two main cities of San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
This road is also used by the vast majority of tourists as it connects the main airport in the area, Los Cabos International Airport, to the rest of the municipality.
