Most people choosing Los Cabos for their holidays do so to spend time swimming and sunbathing on its breathtaking beaches.
El Médano, Santa Maria, and Lovers Beach are just some of the stunning places where tourists tend to gather to make the most out of Los Cabos’ sunny weather.
Beaches in the area are extremely safe, mostly due to the huge effort made by the local authorities to protect tourists from the ever-changing conditions of the sea as well as from the many unauthorized vendors selling fake services in these areas.
Despite this, sometimes accidents do occur. So, what happened recently? And should tourists be concerned?
What happened?
Unfortunately, a man recently lost his life at sea on La Ventana Beach. The fatality occurred on Tuesday the 31st, when the SPM-222 unit received a call from the Radio Central of the Directorate of Public Security, Preventive Police, and Municipal Transit, communicating that someone had drowned.
The man was a foreigner in his fifties. Apart from this, not much is known about him.
The local Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) immediately arrived on the scene to transfer the man to the nearest hospital to carry out the legal autopsy procedures.
Despite being the most tragic accident that occurred at sea in the area in 2024, this was not the only incident that happened in Los Cabos recently.
Two minor accidents also took place in the municipality in the last few days. Local news reported that lifeguards had to provide medical services to a woman who got stung by an aguamala, a jellyfish found in Los Cabos. The young woman was a 21-year-old tourist from Tijuana called Fernanda and was stung on El Médano beach while enjoying the sea.
The other accident involved a 40-year-old local man called Seledonio Gabriel, who cut his foot while walking on the beach, probably due to trash left on the beach.
Both people received first aid and were promptly transferred to the nearest hospital.
Should tourists be concerned?
In light of these recent accidents, people heading to Los Cabos soon may now be wondering whether these beaches are safe. Luckily, the answer is yes.
Several beaches in the municipality are completely safe for swimmers. Among these are Playa Las Viudas, Santa Maria Beach, and Chileno Beach, just to mention a few.
Despite this, it’s important to specify that some areas are not accessible to bathers. For instance, Playa Solmar, Pedregal Beach, and Divorce Beach are always characterized by strong waves and currents, making these areas inaccessible to bathers all year round.
Tourists, however, shouldn’t worry too much about these as they will always find warning flags to signal the danger.
In particular, red flags indicate a prohibition from entering the sea, while black flags forbid tourists from accessing the shore as well as the water.
Lastly, beaches such as Playa Monumentos, El Tule Beach, and Playa Acapulquito are only accessible to surfers and not to bathers due to the strong waves found there.
What is the Los Cabos government doing to keep its beaches safe?
Tourists should also remember that the local government is constantly trying to improve the safety levels of its beaches with a number of initiatives.
For instance, the Los Cabos government recently decided to hire more lifeguards to keep protecting tourists.
On top of this, a massive cleaning initiative has recently been carried out to prepare for the upcoming spring break period which will lead thousands of foreigners to Los Cabos’ beaches.
The local authorities also decided to increase security in the most popular sites in the municipality, including some beaches, such as El Médano Beach.
This decision was taken to limit illicit actions such as theft and drug dealing as well as to prevent unauthorized vendors from scamming tourists with their fake deals.
On average, tourists heading to Los Cabos soon can relax and enjoy their holiday without worrying too much about their safety while always paying attention to advice and recommendations issued by lifeguards and other competent authorities.
