In recent times, Los Cabos has slowly established itself as one of the best destinations for foodies in Mexico.
According to recent data, more than one in ten tourists visit this location to try the local cuisine and learn about the ancient culinary techniques of this area.
But what makes this corner of Mexico different from the rest of the country? Here are three reasons why Los Cabos is becoming one of the top foodie destinations in Mexico.
Soon to be listed on the Michelin Guide
The Michelin Guide’s representatives recently announced that Los Cabos will be among the Mexican destinations that will soon visited by the company’s food experts in 2024.
Los Cabos was chosen together with a few other destinations, including Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Nuevo León. More places still have to be announced, together with the complete list of restaurants that will receive a visit from Michelin’s experts.
Talking about the announcement, the International Director of Michelin Guides, Gwendal Poullennec, declared that his team is eager to welcome all the flavors of the Mexican cuisine, adding: “Mexico has a wealth of fascinating and impressive gastronomic options and passionate culinary talent.”
Every Los Cabos restaurant chosen by the experts will be rated according to the Michelin Guide’s historical methodology based on five main criteria: quality of ingredients, mastery of culinary techniques, harmony of flavors, expression of the chef’s personality through his/her food creations, and consistency both in the menu and throughout the restaurant’s history.
Based on this methodology, restaurants will be awarded from one to three Michelin stars, a Bib Gourmand award for the best quality/price ratio, or a Michelin Green Star, for restaurants committed to sustainability.
Best organic products
Los Cabos is also slowly growing a reputation for being one of the top organic producers in Mexico.
Not by chance, Forbes writers stated Los Cabos is: “The number one organic producer in Mexico and one of the biggest farm-to-table destinations globally.”
Not only is Los Cabos home to plenty of organic restaurants, but also to a huge variety of organic markets where locals regularly buy their ingredients.
One of the largest organic farmers markets in the municipality is the San José Organic Market, held every Saturday from 9 a.m. in Calle Centenario.
Talking about organic restaurants, most of these are located on the same farms, providing them with the ingredients for their dishes.
Some of the most popular ones include Acre and Flora Farm. The food in these eateries goes directly from the fields to the kitchen and the customers’ table without traveling for miles in polluting trucks.
Known as farm-to-table, this innovative restaurant concept is now on the rise, attracting more and more tourists to Los Cabos every year.
Not only does farm-to-table dining allow visitors to get familiar with Mexican local products, but it is also in line with the growing green revolution now revolutionizing the food industry all over the world.
Great fine-dining restaurants
Last but not least, Los Cabos is home to a variety of fine-dining restaurants where every day world-renowned chefs showcase their skills and creations.
One of the most popular is, without a doubt, Los Tamarindos. This farm-to-table restaurant is located in a 19th-century farmhouse and features an ever-changing menu to make the most out of the seasonal products available in the lands surrounding it.
Los Tamarindos is known for its Mexican menu, including dishes made from the freshest products, ranging from veggies picked up from the restaurants’ fields to fish daily caught by local fishermen.
Los Tamarindos also offers classes for those interested in scaling up their cooking skills.
Another great Los Cabos restaurant is the Cocina de Autor, which can be translated as Signature Cuisine. This is the perfect place for tourists looking for a fine dining experience in Los Cabos.
Cocina de Autor is located in the massive resort Grand Velas, and most of the dishes present on its menu are characterized by intriguing pairs such as chocolate and clam, designed to make your taste buds explode with flavors!
