Many people consider the number seven to be good luck. That’s unless you plan to hit the beach in Los Cabos this busy holiday weekend.

Tourists looking to hit the beaches of Los Cabos this Labor Day three-day weekend may encounter seven of the most popular beaches in the area closed due to dangerous waves.

Black Flags Posted

Dangerous waves offshore of Los Cabos have some of the busiest tourist beaches in the resort destination sporting black flags over the holiday weekend in the United States, celebrating the traditional end of summer.

Unfortunately, tourists will find a black flag posted on all of the beaches of the San Jose del Cabo Tourist Corridor.

Other beaches with posted black flags include the popular Palmilla, Las Viudas, Santa Maria, El Chileno, El Corsario, and El Medano.

Black flags indicate that there is no swimming allowed and the water is completely off-limits to swimmers and bathers.

In fact, Los Cabos law enforcement is authorized to cite and potentially arrest individuals found in the water while black flags are posted on the beach.

Officials Monitoring Waves

After the black flags are posted on area beaches, prohibiting any swimming or bathing by tourists, local officials constantly monitor the situation and could reopen swimming if the conditions improve.

Los Cabos civil protection officials and area lifeguards will receive constant wave condition updates from weather forecasters and maritime experts.

The good news for Los Cabos tourists is that the dangerous wave conditions are expected to improve later on during the weekend.

The Beach Flag System

Los Cabos has a preventative flag system in place to help keep tourists and locals safe at area beaches.

The flag system is administered by the Los Cabos Municipal Civil Protection Department along with lifeguards posted at local beaches.

While black flags indicate that the waters are closed and off-limits to swimmers and bathers, there are other flags in the system to help communicate beach conditions to tourists.

The beach safety flags in Los Cabos operate similarly to a stoplight at an intersection.

Green means the beach is open for swimming with no restrictions in place. The conditions are good for swimming, bathing or diving. However, Los Cabos tourists should take normal beach swimming precautions.

Yellow indicates that the beach conditions are hazardous, however swimming, bathing, and diving are still allowed. Tourists should exercise extreme caution getting in the water while a yellow flag is posted on a beach. Further, it is at their own risk.

Red flag posted on El Medano beach

Red flags mean that bathing and swimming is prohibited at the beach. However, the beach is not closed. Nobody is allowed to enter the water during a red flag event.

There is one additional flag, the white flag, which indicates a special warning to swimmers.

The white flag indicates the presence of jellyfish on the beach and in the water. Swimmers and bathers are allowed to enjoy the beach. However, it is not recommended.

Tourists can swim at a beach where a white flag is posted. Doing so assumes the personal risk for any jellyfish stings and potentially needed medical care.

Impact For Visitors

While seven of the most popular beaches in Los Cabos are off-limits for part of the busy Labor Day three-day weekend, conditions are expected to improve.

Despite the dangerous waves, there are still a number of great activities to do in Los Cabos that don’t involve the closed beaches.

Tourists can enjoy fun activities such as four-wheeling and hiking, enjoy luxury spa amenities, dip in a refreshing hotel pool, or even take a day trip to one of the many nearby magical towns.

Chances are the beaches will be open soon. The beach dangers provide visitors to the beach resort destination with the opportunity to try many other things to enjoy a fun vacation getaway.
