Tourists Still Flocking To Los Cabos After Weather Threats

Despite a pounding from Hurricane Hilary, the tourist zone of Los Cabos ultimately came through the impact of the strong category-four storm pretty well.

Because of this, hotel reservations for Los Cabos are still strong after Hurricane Hilary, with few cancellations from both domestic and international tourists.

Few Tourist Impacts

It definitely could have been a lot worse for Los Cabos. A few more miles east could have had a more significant impact on the tourist experience in Baja California Sur.

Unfortunately, some of the local communities were hit harder than the prepared and tested tourist zone.

As a result, most of the infrastructure that tourists need to enjoy their experience in Los Cabos is still intact and functioning well.

There will be some general impacts, such as some sand needing to be replaced on local beaches. However, most roads tourists use are still in place, and the airport is functioning as usual.

For tourists, Los Cabos is essentially the same after Hurricane Hilary, and as a result, the hotel properties are reporting few to no cancellations after the strong category four storm.

Occupancy Still About 70 Percent

After the storm, visitors to Los Cabos are still expected to fill an average of 70 percent of the hotel rooms in the beach resort destination.

While that number may seem low for occupancy in Los Cabos, that is actually pretty normal for the beach resort destination during this time of year.

International travelers from the United States and other countries are expected to fill about 50 percent of the available hotel rooms in Los Cabos going forward this summer.

The remainder of the hotel rooms should be filled by domestic tourists from the different states of Mexico.

Hotel Contingency Plans Worked

The plans hotels had in place for sheltering tourists during hazardous conditions worked well. There will ultimately be some learnings that will help prepare them better for the next storm.

However, visitors to Los Cabos should feel secure that the hotels and resorts have plans in place to protect those who are stranded due to extreme weather conditions.

Safety and security are common concerns travelers have when choosing a vacation destination.

They should now feel more comfortable planning a hurricane-season getaway to Los Cabos.

Hotel Rates Firm With Some Good Deals

Room reservations remain strong, and so far, hotel room rates are holding up for what is typical for the off-season summer travel period in Los Cabos.

Travelers should expect average hotel room rates around $200-$400 per night, especially at higher-end all-inclusive resorts.

However, a quick scan for the second week of September saw some mid-range all-inclusive resorts actually priced around $200 or less. Several were priced in the $150 per night range.

Tourists should be aware that some of the lower-end specials may be non-refundable in advance of booking the Los Cabos resort hotel deals.

Air Fares Steady

Reviewing the airfares to Los Cabos from Los Angeles, as an example, showed a normal range for flight prices.

The range when this story was written was $190-$400, even during the upcoming Labor Day weekend holiday in the United States.

As usual, Spirit Airlines was the lowest-priced flight, with the majors being significantly higher, starting at around $300 for American Airlines.

What it Means For Tourists

For those planning a vacation getaway to Los Cabos in the next couple of weeks, plans should continue as planned.

There was very little impact on the infrastructure that tourists would experience and require for their vacation in Los Cabos.

That’s the good news about the impact of Hurricane Hilary.

However, for those hoping for a number of room night cancellations and visitors canceling their flight plans, resulting in lower rates and fares, it is unlikely to happen.
