Restaurants And Tourist Activities Resume In Los Cabos After Hurricane Hilary

Although Hurricane Hilary was not projected to make direct landfall in Los Cabos, caution prompted officials to take precautionary measures to keep tourists safe.   

The closure of certain businesses, the beaches, and the port was initiated in order to protect locals and visitors.   

But now restaurants and activities have resumed business as usual in Los Cabos following the passage of Hurricane Hilary. 

Business As Usual In Los Cabos  

The beaches of the Los Cabos remained closed immediately following the passing of the hurricane due to the continuing presence of dangerous conditions.   

But it didn’t take long for tourists to get back out on the beaches in Los Cabos, particularly Medano Beach.   

On this, Los Cabos’ most famous beach, tour operators are present again, most restaurants are open, stores are open again, alcohol is for sale once again, and there is no shortage of tourists milling around.

Hurricane Hilary 

Hurricane Hilary, the first Hurricane to affect Los Cabos during the 2023 hurricane season, passed by the vacation destination over this past weekend.   

It started out as a tropical storm on Wednesday, August 16 but developed into an actual hurricane very quickly.   

By Friday morning, it was already less than 400 miles off the coast of Los Cabos.

Hilary’s Effect On Los Cabos 

Hurricane Hilary remained quite a distance off the coast of Los Cabos, but it did have effects on the vacation destination.   

As it passed by it was a Category 2 storm, which means the strongest winds produced by the storm could reach as high as 110 mph, with gusts even higher.   

Although winds that high didn’t reach Los Cabos, strong winds and large waves did affect the region.

Closures During Hurricane Hilary  

Due to the strong winds and huge waves that were to be expected as the hurricane passed by the Baja Peninsula, there were a number of closures.   

The ports were closed and tourist boat tours were canceled.   

Black flags were also placed on the beaches, signaling that not just the water was off limits, but the beaches as well.   

Tourists In Los Cabos During The Storm 

Hurricane Hilary developed so quickly that there was no time for tourists visiting Los Cabos to leave, and it passed so fast that very few, if any, had to cancel their vacations.   

That being said, there were thousands of tourists in Los Cabos before and after the storm, staying at the many hotels that remained open, with contingency plans in place to keep tourists safe.   

There were no reports of any tourists visiting during the storm being injured or displaced from their hotels.

Los Cabos’ Hurricane Season 

The Hurricane season in Los Cabos occurs between mid-May and the end of November, with the most active part of the season taking place in late August.   

September is also historically a significantly active month.   

It’s important to note, though, that it’s very rare for these storms to make a direct landfall in Los Cabos.   

Traveling To Los Cabos During Hurricane Season 

While it may be a little disconcerting thinking about traveling to Los Cabos during hurricane season, it’s very rare that the vacation destination really feels the effects of a storm.   

One way to protect yourself if you are going to book a Los Cabos vacation during these months, though, is to purchase travel insurance.   

To be sure, insurance won’t cure the disappointment of having to cancel your vacation if that situation should occur, but it will protect your investment so that you can take your Los Cabos vacation at a later date.
