Los Cabos, which includes San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, is an amazing vacation destination with plenty to keep you busy for a few days or more.  But sometimes you might want to escape the tourist crowd for a little while during your visit, or maybe you simply want to see something different without having to go very far.

Well, you’re in luck because we’re going to tell you about 6 incredible cultural towns near Los Cabos that are perfect for a day trip!

Balandra Beach, La Paz, Baja California Sur

La Paz

La Paz is the capital city of the state of Baja California Sur and is located only a little over two hours away from Cabo San Lucas.  It’s popular among artists from all over the world and is known for its waterfront restaurants and bars, its beautiful beaches, its seaside promenade, Malecón, and the 19th-century cathedral that sits in the center of town.

The population of the city is around 250,000, yet it still somehow feels like a small seaside port town.

Miraflores

Miraflores is a small town of fewer than 1,500 people that is located about an hour away from Cabo San Lucas.  The town was founded in the early part of the 18th century and it still has a very historic feel, with shops filled with handcrafted items, like leatherworks, pottery, and furniture.  Miraflores is also very close to the Sierra de La Laguna mountains, where you’ll find opportunities for hiking, ATVing, and even taking a dip in a hot spring.

Santiago

Also only about an hour from Cabo San Lucas, Santiago is another very small town, of less than 1,000 people, that is also worth visiting.  Founded in 1723, the town today is an important agricultural asset, with palm trees and fruit orchards spread throughout the small town.  Santiago is also close to three different hot springs you can visit during your day trip too, Santa Rita, El Chorro, and Agua Caliente.

El Triunfo

The smallest of the towns on this list, El Triunfo, has a population of just over 300 people but it used to be populated with more than 10,000 residents.  This is because, until 1926 it was an active mining town, and it was the biggest city in the state of Baja California Sur.  It sits less than two hours away from Cabo San Lucas and welcomes hundreds of tourists every weekend.

Los Barriles

Los Barriles is a laid-back little fishing village located about an hour and a half away from Cabo San Lucas and has a population of around 1,200 people.  It’s known for its beaches, adventure activities (specifically kitesurfing), fishing, and dolphin and sea lion sightings.  The main street running through the town has taco spots, and cafes, and the town is home to a number of resorts.

Todos Santos

Todos Santos is one of Mexico’s Magic Towns and is located in the state of Baja California Sur, and it’s only about an hour away from Cabo San Lucas.  The culturally and historically significant town has a population of around 6,500 people and is known for its art community and for being a great place for surfing.  The Profesor Néstor Agúndez Martínez Cultural Center, which is also home to a history museum, is a popular tourist attraction, as are the numerous art galleries in the city.
