2 Popular Los Cabos Tourist Spots Are Getting a $6.5 Million Makeover (Plus a New Attraction!)

We at The Cabo Sun love a good glow-up—and this one is big.

Los Cabos officials have confirmed a fresh investment of 120 million pesos (about $6.5 million USD) to spruce up three of the destination’s most-visited areas: Downtown Cabo San Lucas, Downtown San José del Cabo, and a new attraction point along the Tourist Corridor.

The funds come through the local tourism trust (FITURCA), and technical plans are already in motion, with oversight by the city’s Urban Development team.

What’s getting upgraded—and why it matters for your trip

According to the announcement, the biggest slices of the budget go to the historic/commercial cores of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

Expect a focus on sidewalks, lighting, shade, landscaping, and public spaces—the kinds of improvements you actually feel when you’re strolling, shopping, or grabbing tacos after the beach. The city has been building toward this for a while; we recently reported that a major revitalization is coming to Downtown Cabo San Lucas, with refreshed streetscapes designed to make the area more walkable and welcoming.

On the San José side, the historic center anchored by Plaza Mijares has seen ongoing beautification—from decluttering visual noise to deep cleanups and plantings—that visitors are already noticing. If you love the art walk vibe and café patios here, these upgrades are aimed squarely at making that experience smoother in peak season.

The third piece of the plan: a new visitor point in the middle of the Tourist Corridor. Details are still under wraps, but the goal is another attractive stop along the 33-km strip that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo—home to many resorts, golf courses, and beaches.

Timing and what to expect during works

Officials say the projects are approved and monitored, but an exact construction start date wasn’t given.

Translation: you may not see shovels tomorrow, but you should notice activity ramping up as funds are transferred and contracts kick in. When street work begins, short-term inconveniences (lane reductions, sidewalk detours) are common.

We’ve covered similar disruptions before—like temporary slowdowns tied to road construction—and the city tends to manage traffic flow as phases roll out. Plan a few extra minutes for transfers if you’re headed through the downtown cores at rush hour.

How this could improve your Cabo vacation

  • Easier walking nights out in Cabo San Lucas. A cleaner, better-lit downtown means friendlier routes between the marina, nightlife, and taco stops—part of a longer arc of upgrades centro businesses have pushed for years.
  • A more photogenic (and shady!) San José del Cabo. Upgrades build on recent efforts around the Historic Center to keep plazas comfortable and camera-ready—great for pre-dinner strolls and gallery hopping.
  • Another reason to explore the Corridor. With a new attraction planned mid-Corridor, you’ll have a fresh stop to break up beach days or a scenic transfer between towns.

Quick tips to make the most of it

  • Pick your base with intention. If you want the buzzy marina-and-nightlife scene, Cabo San Lucas will shine even brighter as upgrades land. If you’re into galleries and a slower pace, San José del Cabo’s historic center is on a hot streak—and value has been strong this year.
  • Time your outings. During active construction phases, do your taco runs or shopping walks before 5 p.m. or after the evening rush to avoid partial lane closures and detours. (We’ll keep you posted as schedules firm up.)
  • Build in buffer time for transfers. If you’re bouncing between towns for dinner or art night, give yourself an extra 10–15 minutes—similar to what we advised in our piece on road work and traffic relief earlier this season.

Bottom line

Los Cabos is investing in the places travelers love most—your evening strolls, plaza hangs, and corridor day trips.

While there may be short-term cones and detours, the payoff is a cleaner, safer, more walkable experience right where you spend your time.

As timelines firm up, we’ll keep tracking milestones and detours so you can keep your vacation smooth and sun-soaked.
