What To Do If Your Los Cabos Flight Is Delayed (And How To Make The Best Of It)

Share The Article

Wrapping up a spectacular Cabo vacation is hard enough without staring at the departure board in Terminal 2 and seeing your flight time suddenly pushed back. Because SJD is incredibly busy processing hundreds of international flights a week, rolling delays are an inevitable part of the travel ecosystem—especially during the peak spring travel window.

When that dreaded delay notification pops up, the vast majority of tourists instantly default to panic mode. They crowd the gate, anxiously refresh their phones, and make impulse decisions that end up costing them money.

I literally just went through this exact scenario two days ago when my flight out of Cabo was delayed by over an hour. If you find yourself stuck at the airport with extra time to kill, getting frustrated won’t get the plane to the gate any faster. Instead of stressing out, here is the exact, field-tested tactical playbook I used to handle the delay like a pro.

Airplane at Los Cabos Airport getting ready to depart

1. The Lounge Strategy (Stay Put & Trust The Screens)

If you have access to the VIP Lounge in Terminal 2, a delay is significantly less painful. But you have to play it smart to keep your comfortable seat.

  • Ignore the App: Airline mobile apps are notoriously laggy when it comes to international departures. Your app might tell you it is time to board, while the actual plane hasn’t even landed yet. I used the physical departure screens inside the lounge to continuously check the time. If I had listened to the app, I would have left the lounge way too early.
  • The Re-Entry Hack: Do not throw away the physical ticket or receipt they give you when you walk in. If you do step out to check the gate and realize you still have a long wait, the front desk will often let you back inside using that ticket (subject to capacity availability, of course).
  • Do Not Hover: The biggest mistake travelers make is standing right next to the gate podium for no reason. Stay in your comfy spot in the lounge or find a quiet corner in the food court. Crowding the gate agents will not make the plane board faster.

2. The Connecting Flight Contingency

Direct flights are easy, but if you are flying back to the U.S. with a layover, a delay in Cabo can trigger a massive logistical domino effect.

  • Scout Your Options Early: When my flight was delayed the other day, I knew I was going to miss my connecting flight. Instead of waiting until I landed in Texas to figure it out, I immediately used my downtime in the Cabo lounge to start making arrangements.
  • The “Plan B” Search: I started searching for hotels near the Dallas (DFW) airport right then and there so I would have a solid plan the minute I touched down. Map out which hotels have free 24-hour shuttles and availability for that specific night so you aren’t scrambling in the dark.

3. The “Fault” Rule (To Book Or Not To Book)

While you should absolutely research emergency hotel options from the Cabo terminal, you must follow one strict financial rule: do not actually book anything yet.

  • The Airline’s Fault: If the delay out of Cabo is caused by something within the airline’s control (mechanical issues, a missing flight crew, or a lack of aircraft), they will give you a voucher for a hotel and meals once you land at your connecting hub.
  • The “Act of God” Fault: If the delay is caused by severe weather or an Air Traffic Control ground stop, the airline is not financially liable. In this case, you will have to book the hotel yourself.
  • The Execution: Keep your hotel research tab open on your phone, but wait to hit “confirm” until you know exactly whose fault the delay is. If you jump the gun and book a non-refundable room out of pocket, you cannot get reimbursed if the airline ends up handing out vouchers.

4. Kill Time Like A Local

If you don’t have to worry about a missed connection, a delay is just bonus vacation time.

  • The Last Meal: SJD actually has a highly functional food court. Skip the sad, pre-packaged sandwiches and grab a final round of fresh tacos and a cold Pacifico at the Corona Sports Bar.
  • Power Up: Terminal 2 has notoriously few wall outlets at the actual gates. Use this time to hunt down a charging station or plug in your portable battery pack so your devices are at 100% when you finally board.
