When you finally board from the US or beyond, your Cabo San Lucas itinerary is likely already packed with sunset catamaran tours, long days by the infinity pool, and world-class dining. But if you have any appreciation for rock ‘n’ roll history or legendary nightlife, there is one iconic spot that almost always makes the bucket list: Sammy Hagar’s famous Cabo Wabo Cantina.
Since opening in 1990, the “Red Rocker” has turned this downtown venue into a globally recognized party landmark. It is loud, vibrant, and completely steeped in musical lore. However, because it is such a massive tourist draw, knowing exactly how to navigate the cantina can make or break your experience.
If you are planning to grab a drink at this iconic venue on your next trip, here are the top five tips for visiting Cabo Wabo, straight from seasoned travelers who know the ropes.

1. Go During The Day For Effortless, Chill Vibes
There is a massive misconception that Cabo Wabo is only accessible if you are willing to stand in a massive line wrapped around the block. In reality, the time of day you choose to visit completely dictates your experience.
When my team and I visited the cantina, we opted to drop in right in the middle of the afternoon. If your primary goal is simply to soak in the famous atmosphere, grab a bite to eat, and snap some great photos without being shoulder-to-shoulder with a massive crowd, the daytime is absolutely perfect. You can walk right in without waiting a single minute.
The daytime vibe is incredibly laid-back, the service is fast, and you can freely explore the venue to check out the rock memorabilia covering the walls before the chaotic evening rush begins.

2. Brace Yourself For Premium Drink Prices
One of the most common shocks for first-time visitors is the final bill. Because the cantina is located in Mexico, many travelers falsely assume they are going to find low, local street-level prices at the bar.
Cabo Wabo is an international tourist landmark, and the pricing entirely reflects that status. Travelers consistently note that the drink menus resemble what you would expect to pay in a major metropolitan city like Los Angeles, New York, or Miami.
Expect to pay premium prices for standard cocktails and even more for top-shelf tequila flights. Bring a healthy budget, prepare to spend a little extra for the novelty of the experience, and do not expect a bargain-basement bar tab.

3. Go Late For The True Rock ‘N’ Roll Party
While the afternoon offers a relaxed, uncrowded experience, you will completely miss out on the live music. If you want the authentic, high-energy party atmosphere that made the cantina famous in the first place, you need to pace yourself for a late night.
The venue usually does not start filling up with the real party crowd until after 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM. The resident house band is notoriously excellent, covering classic rock anthems with incredible energy. Furthermore, the venue’s history of surprise celebrity drop-ins is very real. It is not uncommon for famous musicians vacationing in town—like ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons or even Sammy Hagar himself—to randomly jump on stage for an impromptu jam session late into the night. If you want the music, embrace the crowds and go late.

4. Skip The Basic Beer And Order A “Waborita”
When you are sitting at one of the most famous tequila bars on the planet, ordering a basic imported draft beer is a massive missed opportunity.
The cantina operates as the physical home for Sammy Hagar’s signature spirits, and you should absolutely lean into the specialty cocktail menu. Travelers highly recommend ordering the legendary “Waborita”—a premium, perfectly balanced margarita crafted with Cabo Wabo Reposado tequila, Damiana liqueur, and a splash of blue curacao. If you are feeling slightly more adventurous, ask the bartender to mix up a cocktail using Hagar’s Santo Mezquila, a unique blend of tequila and mezcal that adds an incredible, smoky depth to your drink.

5. Balance Your Budget With Nearby Local Tacos
Because spending an entire evening eating dinner and drinking premium cocktails at Cabo Wabo can quickly drain your vacation budget, veteran travelers highly recommend a hybrid approach to the night.
Rather than eating a full, expensive meal inside the cantina, stretch your dollar by exploring the surrounding downtown streets first. The area immediately outside the venue is packed with incredible, highly authentic local taco stands and casual bars.
Grab a massive plate of cheap, world-class street tacos at a nearby local favorite like Taco Loco, or pre-game with heavily discounted beers at a smaller surrounding bar. Once you are full, head over to Cabo Wabo just to enjoy the live music and buy one or two signature drinks to cap off the night perfectly.
