Todos Santos vs. La Paz – Which Day Trip is Right for You? (This Quiz Will Tell You In Seconds)

Share The Article

You have decided to rent a car and escape the “Cabo Bubble” for a day. Excellent choice.

But now you face the classic Baja dilemma: West or North?

To the West lies Todos Santos, the dusty, artistic “Pueblo Mágico” known for its surf and farm-to-table dining. To the North lies La Paz, the state capital known for the Sea of Cortez, whale sharks, and the most beautiful beach in Mexico.

Both are incredible, but they offer completely different energies. If you only have one day, you need to pick the one that matches your travel personality.

Here is the breakdown of the “Golden Triangle” to help you decide.

1. The Logistics (The Drive)

Before we talk about vibes, we have to talk about commitment. The reality of Baja travel is that distance dictates your schedule. While the highways are modern and safe, the mental load of the drive is vastly different for these two destinations. One is a quick morning cruise; the other is a full-day expedition that requires crossing the Sierra de la Laguna mountains.

  • Todos Santos: This is the “Low Stress” option. It is a straight shot up Highway 19 along the Pacific.
    • Drive Time: ~1 hour.
    • Road Condition: majestic four-lane highway with ocean views. You can leave at 10:00 AM and be back for dinner.
  • La Paz: This is a “Full Day” commitment.
    • Drive Time: ~2 to 2.5 hours each way.
    • Road Condition: You have to cross the mountains or go the long way. To make this worth it, you need to leave Cabo by 7:00 AM.

2. The Vibe Check

The cultural atmosphere of these two towns could not be more distinct. Todos Santos has evolved into a curated enclave for tourists and expats—it feels designed for Instagram and relaxation. La Paz, by contrast, is a working Mexican city with a bustling local economy, a university, and a civic pride that has nothing to do with tourism.

  • Todos Santos (The “Boho” Vibe): Think “Tulum before it got crowded.” It is a town of cobblestone streets, colorful flags , art galleries, and boutique hotels. It appeals to the “Creative Class.” It is quiet, stylish, and incredibly photogenic.
  • La Paz (The “Authentic” Vibe): This is a real Mexican city, not a tourist trap. The heart of the city is the Malecón, a 3-mile waterfront boardwalk filled with families, rollerbladers, and statues. It feels safer, slower, and more grounded than Cabo.

3. The Water Factor (Crucial Difference)

This is usually the deciding factor for families, and it comes down to basic geography. Todos Santos faces the raw power of the open Pacific Ocean, while La Paz sits protected inside the calm, warm embrace of the Sea of Cortez.

  • Todos Santos (Look, Don’t Touch): The Pacific Ocean here is violent. With the exception of Cerritos Beach (a surf break), you cannot swim at most beaches in Todos Santos. It is for watching sunsets, not snorkeling.
  • La Paz (The Aquarium): This is the Sea of Cortez. The water is turquoise, shallow, and calm. This is where you go to snorkel with sea lions or visit Balandra Beach , which is famous for water that is waist-deep for hundreds of yards.

4. The Food Scene

Your stomach should also get a vote. The culinary landscapes reflect the environments: Todos Santos is surrounded by fertile farmland and focuses on agriculture, while La Paz is a port city that focuses on the daily catch.

  • Todos Santos: It is the capital of Farm-to-Table.
    • The Move: Lunch at Jazamango (Chef Javier Plascencia) or Hierbabuena. You are eating vegetables roasted in wood-fired ovens overlooking the fields they grew in.
  • La Paz: It is the capital of Seafood.
    • The Move: Street tacos. Go to Tacos de Pescado El Estadio or Bismarkcito for chocolate clams and fish tacos that cost $2 USD and taste better than a $50 lobster.
