Step Back In Time: Exploring Miraflores

Founded way back in the early 1700s, Miraflores is surrounded by working organic farms, fruit orchards, and dense desert flora. The vibe here is completely different from Cabo San Lucas—it is slow, peaceful, and rich with local history.

  • Meet the Artisans: Miraflores is famous across the region for its exceptional, handcrafted leatherwork and wooden furniture. Take a stroll through the small, family-run shops and pick up a beautifully crafted belt, purse, or piece of pottery directly from the people who made it.
  • The Pitaya Capital: The surrounding orchards and wild cacti are famous for producing the pitaya (dragon fruit). If you happen to visit during July, you can catch the vibrant Pitaya Festival, which celebrates the harvest with local music, dancing, and incredibly fresh fruit.
  • Feast on Authentic Baja Flavors: Swap your overpriced resort burger for some traditional ranchero cuisine. The small local restaurants in and around Miraflores serve up some of the most mouth-watering machaca and fresh, handmade tortillas you will find anywhere in Baja.

The Main Event: Finding The Hidden Hot Springs

While wandering the town itself is a fantastic cultural stop, the absolute coolest part of this adventure lies just up the dirt roads in the surrounding canyons.

Hiding deep within the mountains are incredible natural hot springs that create a lush, beautiful contrast to the arid desert landscape.

  • Santa Rita Hot Springs: Located just a short, bumpy drive away past the neighboring town of Santiago, these thermal pools are tucked between giant granite boulders alongside a cool, freshwater river. You can literally alternate between soaking in the steaming thermal waters and plunging into the refreshing stream to cool off!
  • El Chorro Hot Springs: Another fantastic nearby option, this natural spring flows down the Agua Caliente Canyon into a large pool at the base of a steep rocky wall.
  • A True Oasis: Both locations are surrounded by tall palm trees, vibrant greenery, and tiny cascading waterfalls. Access is managed by the local ranches, and you can expect to pay a small entrance fee (typically around 150 to 160 pesos in cash per person) to enter these protected ecological areas.

How To Make The Trip Happen

Getting to Miraflores is a total breeze, but navigating to the remote hot springs requires just a little more planning. You basically have two ways to tackle this trip, depending on your comfort level.

  • Driving Yourself: You can easily rent a car and drive north on Highway 1. While the highway drive to Miraflores and Santiago is totally smooth, the final stretch to the hot springs involves navigating unpaved, sandy, washboard dirt roads. A high-clearance vehicle or small SUV is highly recommended if you want to tackle this on your own.
  • Booking A Guided Tour: Not feeling confident about driving off-road? No problem! Several eco-tour operators in Los Cabos offer private guided day trips. These tours typically include round-trip hotel transportation, a guided hike to the hot springs, and a lunch stop for authentic tacos.
  • Prepare to Disconnect: Be aware that your cell phone service will completely disappear once you head into the canyons toward the springs. Always download your offline maps before leaving your resort, pack plenty of drinking water, and bring along some biodegradable sunscreen and a sturdy pair of walking shoes.
