When you are scrolling through travel forums or Instagram looking for the perfect Los Cabos excursion, it is incredibly easy to skip right over the Sol de Mayo Waterfall in Fox Canyon (Cañon de la Zorra).

Compared to the highly saturated drone shots of El Arco or the pristine, glass-walled infinity pools at the ultra-luxury resorts, the online photos of this hike do it absolutely zero justice. Through a camera lens, it usually looks like a dry, dusty desert path leading to a surprisingly small puddle of water surrounded by a pile of granite and some shrubs.

It looks decidedly underwhelming. But we went anyway—and it completely blew our minds.

The magic of Fox Canyon is entirely about the sensory contrast and the physical scale, which compressed JPEGs simply cannot capture. If you are willing to leave your resort for a few hours, here is why this is the most underrated adventure on the peninsula.

1. The Transition (Leaving The Bubble)

The excursion begins the moment you leave the highly commercialized, busy tourist corridor. You drive about an hour north past San José del Cabo, turning inland at the small, sleepy oasis town of Santiago.

As you drive deeper into the foothills of the rugged Sierra de la Laguna mountains, the paved roads turn to dirt, and your cell service drops. You are no longer on a canned “booze cruise” tour; it feels like an authentic expedition into the wild heart of Baja.

2. The Oasis Effect

You start the hike walking through a stark, sun-baked landscape, sweating in the intense desert heat. It is dry, dusty, and full of cacti.

But suddenly, the desert fractures. As you descend into the canyon, the environment shifts violently into a lush, green, tropical biosphere.

The sound of dry wind is replaced by the roar of rushing water. It is a jarring, spectacular contrast that you have to experience physically to appreciate.

3. The Swim

At the bottom of the canyon, you reach the prize: a stunning 40-foot waterfall plunging into a deep, jade-green pool.

After hiking in the sun, slipping into the water is a massive, invigorating relief. It is pristine, fresh, and shockingly cold. Swimming across the natural pool right up to the base of the waterfall, surrounded by massive granite boulders that tower over you, feels wild, secluded, and ancient. It makes the resort pools back in Cabo San Lucas feel completely artificial by comparison.

4. The Quiet

Perhaps the most incredible part of Fox Canyon is what you don’t hear. There are no jet skis whining in the background. There is no thumping bass from a beach club speaker. There are no vendors asking if you want to buy a silver bracelet.

It offers a profound sense of silence and natural isolation that is almost impossible to find anywhere near the marina or Medano Beach. It completely resets your brain.

Book it, trust us

Don’t trust the photos you see online. If you are reasonably fit and want to see what the “real” Baja California Sur looks like, hiking into Fox Canyon is an absolute must-do.
