Should You Cancel Your Los Cabos Trip Amid The New Mexico Travel Alert?

Share The Article

Social media feeds are currently overflowing with frantic questions and widespread anxiety regarding upcoming vacations to Mexico. In the wake of a highly publicized military clash on Sunday, February 22, many tourists are rushing to contact their airlines, wondering if their upcoming trip to Los Cabos is still safe.

If you are scheduled to fly into San José del Cabo (SJD) this week, it is crucial to step away from the viral rumors and look at the verified facts. Here is exactly what is happening in mainland Mexico, why the U.S. Embassy issued its latest security alert, and why your Baja getaway remains highly secure.

Should You Cancel Your Cabo Trip Amid The New Mexico Travel Alert

The Mainland Epicenter

The current wave of travel disruptions stems from a specific federal operation that took place on Sunday. Mexican security forces conducted a targeted raid in Tapalpa, located in the western state of Jalisco. This confrontation resulted in the death of a high-profile cartel leader.

In immediate retaliation, criminal organizations launched coordinated roadblocks and burned vehicles across several states to hinder the military. This violence led to a massive suspension of flights at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) and the Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). Airlines such as Air Canada, WestJet, and Porter have completely suspended operations into Puerto Vallarta, advising passengers not to travel to the airport. If your travel plans involved landing in Jalisco, Nayarit, or Sinaloa, your logistics are severely impacted.

The Geographic Reality Check

This is where travelers must apply common sense and consult a map. Los Cabos is fundamentally isolated from the mainland chaos.

The state of Jalisco and the Baja California peninsula are separated by the massive expanse of the Sea of Cortez. Canceling a flight to Cabo San Lucas because of unrest in Puerto Vallarta is like canceling a trip to Honolulu because of a crisis in Los Angeles. The physical roadblocks and safety threats occurring on the mainland have had no impact on the tourist corridor, beaches, or luxury resorts of Los Cabos. The local infrastructure in Baja California Sur is operating completely normally today.

Why Cabo Is Excluded From The Alert

Much of the current panic stems from a rapid misinterpretation of the U.S. Embassy’s official response. Because the retaliatory blockades spread quickly, the Embassy issued a widespread alert urging citizens in several specific locations to shelter in place.

However, if you read the fine print of the diplomatic release, Baja California Sur—the state home to Los Cabos—is completely absent from the warning list. The alert explicitly names “Baja California State (including Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada)” which is located at the northern border, hundreds of miles away. It also lists mainland tourist destinations like Cancun, Mazatlán, and Nuevo Vallarta.

The U.S. State Department deliberately excluded Los Cabos from this shelter-in-place order because the region remains entirely stable and unaffected by the mainland fallout.

The Ground Truth: Live Safety Data

When sensational headlines dominate the news cycle, the best antidote is verifiable data. Through the live Traveler Safety Index, we continuously monitor the real-time sentiment of tourists who are physically on the ground in Baja California Sur.

The current signals highlight a calm, secure environment. As of today, the safety index for Cabo San Lucas is sitting at a stellar 93. These numbers indicate that the vast majority of visitors are experiencing a completely normal vacation, detached from the mainland headlines. The minor complaints logged reflect standard tourist annoyances, rather than legitimate security fears.

The Verdict

Should you cancel your trip? No, according to travelers and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, there are no alerts at this time.

While you should proactively monitor your airline application for any network-wide delays caused by the airspace closures over Jalisco, the destination of Los Cabos is secure. Do not let geographic confusion or internet panic derail your hard-earned vacation. Pack your bags, head to the airport, and enjoy the pristine beaches of Baja.

Great to hear southern Baja is considered safe at the moment. No one, however, can predict what the cartel will do next. All of Baja definitely has a cartel presence and is considered a major corridor for transporting their drugs. While I believe Baja is usually quite safe for tourists under normal circumstances, this is by far normal circumstances. The US involvement has added to cartel threats, plus, in the near future the various cartels may very well start a turf war and who knows what that will entail. Even if nothing happens, my thoughts are if you are feeling uneasy about travel anywhere in Mexico for the time being, you might want to listen to that rather than others. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those who decide to delay their trip to Mexico until you decide for yourself if you are more comfortable.

I don’t know if the author of this article is being dismissive of this but there’s one major difference between the government and law enforcement in MX vs the US. And it’s that here in the US, there’s no cartel that exerts that much control and fear over the government and law enforcement in the US like they do in MX. It’s a well known fact that the cartels run the show and pretty much can do whatever they want in MX so if you think Cabo isn’t at risk, you’re living in fantasy land.

On our return trip the shuttle driver did a good job getting us to the airport but dropped us off at least half a mile or more from our check in point. We are in our eighties, l was ok with that but my husband has asthma. I am sorry I tipped him.
