Residents Protest Over Private Beaches In Los Cabos

Share The Article

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur – Fed up residents of Los Cabos took to the streets this past Saturday, May 17th, to send a clear message: Mexico’s beaches belong to everyone, not just luxury resorts and wealthy individuals. The protest, timed to coincide with a visit from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, highlighted growing frustration over what many see as the creeping privatization of their stunning coastline.

For years, a simmering tension has been building in this popular tourist destination. While Mexican law explicitly states that all beaches are public property, the reality on the ground often feels different. Locals complain that sprawling new resorts and high-end developments are increasingly restricting access to the shoreline, effectively creating “private” beaches for their guests.

“It’s getting harder and harder to just walk to the beach anymore,” said one long-time resident who joined the protest. “They put up fences, security guards tell you it’s private property. But these are our beaches! They belong to the Mexican people.”

The demonstration, which kicked off around 4 p.m. at the Fonatur roundabout in San José del Cabo, was organized by a coalition of citizen groups. Their main demand? Stop the illegal takeover of public beaches and ensure free access for all.

Vicky Güereña Mills, a prominent voice in the movement, explained the protesters’ intentions. “We wanted to welcome President Sheinbaum and respectfully ask her to look into this serious issue. We need the authorities to step up and enforce the law. These beaches are part of our heritage and our way of life.” she told local news.

While President Sheinbaum was in town for official business, including events related to healthcare, housing, and infrastructure, the protesters hoped to get her attention and make their voices heard on a national stage. They are calling for more than just promises; they want to see concrete action to dismantle illegal barriers and ensure that local authorities are held accountable for protecting public access.

The sentiment in Los Cabos is clear: the natural beauty that draws millions of visitors should be accessible to everyone, not cordoned off for the privileged few. As one protestor put it, “We love tourism, it helps our economy. But it shouldn’t come at the cost of our own right to enjoy what is naturally ours.” The fight for Los Cabos’ public beaches, it seems, is far from over.
