Share The Article

It’s a classic Cabo moment. You map out the perfect beach day: a long, leisurely stroll down the entire length of Medano Beach, hopping from one famous waterfront bar to the next. You grab your towel, head down to the sand, and… wait, where did the beach go?

Suddenly, the water is lapping at the front steps of The Office on the Beach, the corridor of sand you planned to walk down has been replaced by waves, and everyone is crowded onto a tiny sliver of shoreline. It can feel like Cabo’s most famous beach is literally disappearing before your eyes.

Is Cabo's Famous Medano Beach Disappearing The Truth About Why The Sand Vanishes at High Tide

So, what’s going on? Is this a permanent change? Here at The Cabo Sun, we’re here to solve the mystery. The good news is, the beach isn’t gone forever. The truth is a fascinating combination of two powerful forces of nature.

The Main Culprit: A Perfect Storm of Tides and Swells

The “vanishing beach” phenomenon happens when two things occur at the exact same time.

First is the simple high tide. Like every beach in the world, Medano has a natural rhythm. Twice a day, the tide comes in, and the water level rises, covering up a significant portion of the sand. This is the predictable part.

The second, more dramatic factor is a large ocean swell. This is the secret ingredient. Even on a perfectly sunny and windless day in Cabo, a storm hundreds of miles away in the Pacific Ocean can send powerful waves, known as “long-period swells” or mar de fondo, traveling across the sea. When these powerful swells arrive in Cabo, they push a huge amount of water onto the shore, creating a water level that is much higher than a normal high tide.

When a high tide and a large swell coincide, you get the “disappearing beach” effect. The water level surges, swallowing up the dry sand and making a walk along the water’s edge impossible without getting wet.

A Contributing Factor: A Man-Made Problem

There is one other factor at play. Over the decades, the construction of the Cabo San Lucas marina and other coastal developments has altered the natural flow of currents that used to deposit new sand onto Medano Beach. This has caused some long-term erosion, meaning that in certain areas, the beach is naturally narrower than it was 50 years ago, making the high-tide effect even more dramatic.

How to Plan Your Perfect Beach Walk

The good news is that this is all temporary. The ocean is just flexing its muscles for a few hours.

The secret to a great Medano Beach day is simple: check the tide chart. You can easily Google “Cabo San Lucas tide chart” to see when low tide is scheduled. Plan your long walks for the hours around low tide, and you’ll be rewarded with a massive, wide-open expanse of sand perfect for exploring. A few hours later, as high tide rolls back in, that’s your cue to grab a front-row seat at a beach bar and watch the magic of the ocean happen all over again.
