Faster Cabo Airport Transfers Are Coming Just in Time for Summer Travel

Share The Article

If you have landed at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) at any point over the last year, you know exactly how the arrival process usually goes. You grab your bags, find your private driver, enjoy the first ten minutes of the beautiful desert highway, and then—bam—you hit a wall of brake lights.

The main roundabout in San José del Cabo has historically been the single biggest logistical headache for tourists trying to get from the airport to the coastal hotel zone.

Fortunately, that dreaded arrival bottleneck is about to become a thing of the past. City officials have just announced that the massive infrastructure upgrade at the Glorieta de las Mujeres Libres (formerly known as the Fonatur roundabout) is officially nearing the finish line.

If you are planning a Baja vacation this summer, here is exactly what the new overpass means for your airport transfer and when you can expect the orange construction cones to finally disappear.

The 80% Milestone

To say this project is a massive undertaking would be an understatement. The Glorieta de las Mujeres Libres is the most critical traffic artery in the entire municipality, processing roughly 62,000 vehicles every single day.

This week, Roberto Flores Rivera, the Director General of Urban Development for Los Cabos, confirmed that the construction of the new overpass has officially reached the 80% completion mark. The upper portions of the construction are currently in the most advanced stages, allowing work crews to begin enabling the side lanes to gradually restore the normal flow of traffic.

What the Upgrade Actually Includes

This isn’t just a simple repaving job. The project is a complete, multi-million dollar reimagining of how traffic flows between the airport and the tourist corridors. Once the concrete barriers are removed, travelers and locals will benefit from:

  • A Four-Lane Underpass: The centerpiece of the project is a massive new underpass featuring four central lanes (two heading toward Cabo San Lucas, and two heading back toward San José del Cabo and the airport). This will allow highway traffic to completely bypass the roundabout stops.
  • Dedicated Access Roads: The surface level will feature newly paved side roads and U-turn bridges specifically designed to improve direct connectivity to the hotel zone, eliminating the confusing merging patterns of the past.
  • Urban Upgrades: Beyond the asphalt, the project includes entirely new curbs, public lighting, and safety infrastructure for both drivers and pedestrians.

The Timeline for Summer Travelers

The most exciting news for the tourism sector is the delivery date.

According to Rivera and the local Mobility Committee (headed by Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez), if the current pace of construction is maintained, the entire project is slated to be completed by the first weeks of May 2026.

This timeline means the overpass will be fully operational just in time for the peak summer travel season. Travelers arriving in June, July, and August can expect significantly faster, smoother airport transfers directly to their resorts without sitting in the notorious San José del Cabo gridlock.

Navigating the Final Construction Phase

While the finish line is in sight, we are still in the final stretch of heavy construction. If you are traveling to Los Cabos between now and early May, you need to plan accordingly.

Because of the ongoing work, partial lane closures are still in effect. Active construction fronts are currently located in the section stretching from the City Market area toward the Magisterial neighborhood and the Las Mañanitas descent.

A Mini Vibe Check: Escaping the Gridlock

Your Pre-Flight Strategy: If your flight lands before the overpass officially opens, do not panic. Simply pad your travel itinerary. Coordinate with your airport transportation provider and allow for extra travel time when heading back to SJD for your departure flight.

The short-term construction delays might require a little extra patience this spring, but the long-term payoff is massive. A faster, smoother ride to the beach is something every Cabo traveler can look forward to.
