If you have ever taken a morning stroll along the Cabo San Lucas Marina, you know it is usually a laid-back hub of activity.
Between the charter crews icing down their coolers and tourists snapping photos of the luxury yachts, it is the heartbeat of the downtown tourist zone. But on Thursday morning, that relaxed atmosphere was suddenly interrupted by a major emergency response.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on October 22, a loud explosion echoed across the marina docks, immediately sending plumes of smoke into the air and mobilizing local fire and rescue crews.

The Engine Room Fire
When emergencies happen on the water, response time is everything. Fortunately, the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department is stationed nearby and arrived on the scene almost instantly.
According to the official incident report, the explosion occurred entirely inside a docked vessel.
First responders and witnesses quickly determined that the fire had sparked deep in the boat’s engine room.

Because the crew and nearby dockworkers reacted fast, the blaze was brought under control before it could spread to the highly flammable fiberglass hull or, worse, jump to neighboring multi-million dollar yachts tied up on the same pier.

One Victim Rushed to the Hospital
While the boat was saved from totally burning out, the explosion did result in a serious injury.
Paramedics from the Operations Battalion discovered one man at the scene suffering from first- and second-degree burns. The medical team quickly loaded him into an ambulance (unit S83) and rushed him to a local hospital for a full medical evaluation.
While burns are incredibly painful and require specialized care, authorities reported that the victim was entirely stable upon his arrival at the emergency room.

As the smoke cleared, the Fire Investigation Battalion—led by Captain José Ramón Ledezma—secured the vessel to begin combing through the charred engine room.
The competent authorities are currently running a full investigation to figure out exactly what sparked the explosion and who will ultimately be held liable for the damages.

For tourists planning a sunset cruise or a deep-sea fishing charter this weekend, there is no need to panic or cancel your reservations.
The marina is completely safe, fully operational, and this incident was strictly limited to a single engine room malfunction.
If anything, Thursday morning served as a fantastic reminder of just how fast and professional Cabo’s first responders are when things go wrong on the water.
