For travelers living in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, escaping the brutal East Coast winter for the sunny beaches of Baja California Sur just got significantly easier.
As the 2026 winter high season rapidly approaches, Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) continues to expand its massive network of international connections. This week, the destination officially welcomed the inaugural arrival of a brand-new, direct nonstop flight operated by United Airlines, linking the U.S. capital directly to the southern tip of the Baja peninsula.
If you are based on the East Coast and are tired of enduring massive layovers in Texas just to reach your favorite Cabo resort, here is exactly what you need to know about this new flight path.

The New Washington Dulles Route
The new United Airlines route officially connects Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) directly to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).
According to Rolf Meyer, the United Airlines Director of Sales for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, this specific route was launched to provide travelers in the greater D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area with immediate, direct access to the luxury tourism services of Los Cabos without the hassle of a connecting flight.
The airline has committed serious hardware to the route, utilizing its modern Boeing 737 Max fleet. These aircraft are configured to carry 166 passengers per flight, offering a comfortable, mid-range flying experience for the roughly five-and-a-half-hour journey.

Flight Frequency and Schedule
Unlike some seasonal experimental routes that only fly once a week, United is aggressively targeting the winter travel crowd with a highly robust schedule.
The IAD to SJD direct flight will operate four days a week, specifically on:
- Sundays
- Mondays
- Thursdays
- Saturdays
This specific four-day structure is perfect for both extended family vacations and quick, long-weekend getaways. Travelers can easily depart D.C. on a Thursday morning, spend three nights at a luxury all-inclusive resort on the Tourist Corridor, and fly home on Sunday afternoon without burning through their paid time off.

Expanding the Los Cabos Network
The addition of the Washington Dulles route is a major win for the destination, particularly following the recent news that competing airlines have trimmed some of their East Coast direct flights.
According to Francisco Villaseñor, the administrator of the Los Cabos airport, this new flight is a direct response to the massive facility modernization projects that SJD recently completed to accommodate higher traveler demand. The airport is actively working to make the arrivals process smoother and faster for international tourists.

With the successful launch of this United Airlines route, Los Cabos International Airport now officially connects to a staggering 53 total destinations—comprising 13 domestic flights within Mexico and 40 direct international connections.
