When you finally arrive at your luxury resort in Los Cabos, the standard check-in process is usually incredibly relaxing.

The front desk staff greets you with a cold, damp towel, hands you a welcome margarita, and walks you through the locations of the breakfast buffet and the spa.

But if you are checking into a beachfront hotel in Los Cabos this month, you are going to notice a very distinct, serious addition to the welcome speech.

Following a barrage of offshore tropical storms and massive, aggressive ocean swells battering the coastline, the Los Cabos Hotel Association (AHLC) has mandated a massive new push for ocean safety education.

Right now, frontline hotel staff are being instructed to aggressively warn arriving tourists about the severe, life-threatening risks associated with the Pacific Ocean.

The Problem with “Good Swimmers”

According to Lilzi Orcí, the executive president of the AHLC, resort security teams consistently report that guests ignore safety restrictions because they believe they are “perfect swimmers” back home in the United States.

What these tourists fail to understand is that the ocean surrounding the tip of the Baja peninsula—where the calm Sea of Cortez violently collides with the open Pacific—does not care if you were on your high school swim team. The region is notorious for plunging drop-offs, massive rogue waves, and intense, invisible rip currents. During the current storm season, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported waves reaching up to 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) crashing onto the tourist beaches.

When a 10-foot wall of water slams into a jagged, submerged rock, the resulting undertow is completely uncontrollable.

Mandatory Flag Briefings at Check-In

To combat this ignorance, the AHLC has officially coordinated with both state and municipal Civil Protection councils.

Now, when you check into a beachfront property, the staff is required to explicitly brief you on the beach flag warning system. They will explain exactly what the color of the flag flying outside your resort means:

• Green: Calm conditions.
• Yellow: Use caution; moderate waves.
• Red: High danger; swimming prohibited.
• Black: Extreme danger; the beach is closed, and you cannot walk near the water.

Currently, the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) has determined that conditions are so volatile on several Pacific-facing beaches that black flags are actively flying. If your resort has a black flag planted in the sand, you are not allowed to even wade into the surf to cool off your ankles.
