The Cabo San Lucas marina is the beating heart of the city’s tourism and maritime industry, bustling with luxury yachts, fishing charters, and sunset cruise boats. However, the usually vibrant and peaceful docks turned into a chaotic emergency scene in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Just around 2:30 a.m. on June 27, a severe fire broke out on the docks, completely consuming two docked vessels and triggering a massive, multi-hour response from the local Fire Department.
Thanks to the rapid deployment of emergency crews, a much larger disaster was successfully averted, though the aftermath has left local authorities investigating a potentially tragic situation.

A Massive Midnight Response
When the initial reports of the blaze came in, the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department knew they had to act immediately to prevent a domino effect across the densely packed marina.
- Deploying the Fleet: Operational Commander Hugo Ulises Sandoval immediately dispatched a heavy response. The operation included three land-based fire engines and 18 firefighting personnel.
- The AINA Fireboat: The department also deployed the AINA, their specialized firefighting vessel, to tackle the flames directly from the water.
- Hours of Combat: The crews battled the intense blaze for approximately three hours before finally bringing it under control, navigating the incredibly dangerous environment of burning fiberglass, marine fuel, and electrical lines.

Protecting The Rest Of The Marina
When a fire breaks out in a crowded marina, the biggest threat is how quickly the flames can jump from one fiberglass hull to the next. The boats are docked tightly together, meaning a single fire can easily wipe out an entire row of multi-million dollar yachts and local charter businesses.
Commander Sandoval explained that his team had to execute aggressive containment maneuvers to stop the spread.
While the two initial boats were completely destroyed by the flames, the firefighters’ rapid containment strategy successfully protected the other vessels docked immediately alongside them, significantly reducing the overall damage to the marina’s infrastructure.

During the intense, three-hour battle, the AINA fireboat actually suffered a minor incident due to the heavy maneuvers required to fight the fire. The department is currently working to refloat and evaluate the vessel so it can return to active duty.
A Potential Tragedy Under Investigation
While the fire is now extinguished, the situation remains incredibly tense as authorities move into the investigation phase. The origin of the fire is currently unknown, but a much darker concern is actively being evaluated.

During the initial emergency response, dispatchers received a call indicating that a person might have been trapped inside one of the burning vessels. Commander Sandoval has clarified that this information is strictly a preliminary report and remains unconfirmed.
Due to the total destruction of the boats, standard search procedures are impossible. The Fire Department will now require the assistance of specialized divers to examine the underwater wreckage to either confirm or completely rule out the presence of any casualties.
We will continue to monitor the situation as the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department and local maritime authorities release their official findings regarding the cause of the blaze.
