Warm Ocean Waters Forecast To Fuel Stronger Storms In Cabo This Year

Share The Article

I love a warm swim as much as anyone, but the water temperature around Cabo right now has experts sounding the alarm.

It turns out that “perfect” swimming temperature is actually high-octane fuel for hurricanes.

I’ve been diving into the latest reports, and it looks like we are in for a very intense season.

Here is why I am paying extra close attention to the horizon this year and what you should know before you pack your bags.

🔥 The “High-Octane Fuel” Hiding In The Pacific

Commander Juan Antonio Carbajal Figueroa of the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department recently warned that our waters are getting extremely warm.

Scientists are tracking what they call “submerged hot waves” that are expected to bubble up to the surface in the coming months.

These warm pockets act as fuel that can take a tiny storm and turn it into a monster in a matter of hours.

  • The Pacific could see up to 21 weather phenomena during this 2026 season alone.
  • Warm water acts like a magnet, drawing storms north toward the Baja Peninsula.
  • Experts are comparing these conditions to the “El Niño” patterns that fueled the devastating Hurricane Otis in Acapulco.

⏱️ From A Tropical Breeze To A Category 5 In Record Time

The biggest worry I have right now is how fast these storms can “rapidly intensify”.

Because the ocean surrounding the peninsula is forecast to be so warm, a simple tropical storm can evolve into a Category 3, 4, or 5 hurricane almost overnight.

We saw how quickly things can change with previous storms, and this year the “fuel” is even more potent. We aren’t trying to be alarmist, but we definitely shouldn’t minimize these alerts when they pop up on our phones.

🎒 Your 5-Minute Safety Game Plan

Being a responsible traveler means having a “just in case” plan so you can get back to relaxing. The local fire department is calling on all of us to be preventative rather than reactive.

  • Ask about the plan: Check your resort’s evacuation routes and storm protocols the day you arrive.
  • The “Go-Bag”: Keep an emergency backpack with water, a flashlight, and your important travel documents ready to go.
  • Watch the Service: I’ll be keeping an eye on the National Meteorological Service (SMN) for you, but keep an eye on local alerts too.
