You have finally landed at Los Cabos International Airport, grabbed your luggage, and are ready to head straight to your luxury resort. But if you jump into the wrong vehicle, your relaxing vacation might hit a frustrating speed bump right at the hotel gate.
Currently, a significant crackdown is taking place across the municipality. Local authorities and hotel security teams have joined forces to implement strict access filters at resort entrances, actively turning away certain drivers and limiting access.
If you are currently researching how to get from SJD to your hotel, here is exactly why these new security measures are in place and how to ensure your airport transfer goes smoothly.

The Crackdown on “Pirate” Transportation
The core issue driving these new security filters is the ongoing battle against unfair competition and “piracy” within the federal transportation service.
Los Cabos has a highly regulated transportation network. Currently, there are roughly 1,500 vehicles operating under 300 federally authorized companies that hold the necessary permits to legally transport tourists. However, unauthorized drivers—often referred to as “pirates“—frequently attempt to bypass these regulations, picking up unsuspecting tourists without the proper commercial licenses or insurance.
To combat this, the State Transportation Directorate has initiated a coordinated effort with the local hotel sector to catch unauthorized drivers right at the resort gates.

How the Hotel Filters Work
Martín Salinas Ceseña, the State Director of Transportation, recently detailed how the new system operates. The process is straightforward but strictly enforced:
- The Checkpoint: Security filters are set up directly at the main entrance of the hotels. Every single commercial vehicle attempting to enter the property to drop off or pick up a guest is stopped and inspected.
- The Proof: Drivers must digitally prove that they are providing a legally authorized service through an official platform.
- The Exception: If a private individual arrives claiming they are just picking up or dropping off a friend, they must be able to prove a direct relationship with the guest. If they cannot, the hotel will restrict their access and turn the vehicle away.

It All Comes Down to Safety
While it might seem like a minor administrative issue, the State Transportation Directorate emphasizes that these strict checks are entirely focused on passenger safety.
When you book a ride with a federally authorized transportation company, you are guaranteed to be riding in a vehicle that is properly insured, regularly inspected, and driven by a vetted professional. If an unauthorized driver gets into an accident on the highway, tourists can find themselves in incredibly vulnerable legal and medical situations with no commercial insurance coverage to rely on.
As Salinas Ceseña noted, the ultimate goal is to ensure that tourists travel safely in regulated vehicles, and those without proper authorization simply should not be providing the service.

The Next Step: Airport Inspections
The crackdown at the hotel gates is just the beginning. The State Transportation Directorate is currently looking to expand these inspection and supervision tours directly to the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), aiming to cut off unauthorized services at their primary point of origin before tourists even get into the cars.

How to Guarantee a Smooth Arrival
To ensure you do not end up stranded at the security gate with your luggage, you need to be intentional about how you book your transportation:
- Pre-Book Official Transfers: The safest and easiest route is to book your airport transfer in advance through a reputable, federally authorized company (such as Cabo Airport Shuttle or your hotel’s official transportation service).
- Avoid the “Shark Tank”: When you exit the airport doors, you will be approached by dozens of people offering you a ride. Ignore the aggressive sales pitches and walk directly to your pre-arranged, official transportation provider.
- Do Not Rely on Ride-Shares for Pickups: While Uber operates in the area, they frequently face legal friction and are often not permitted to pick up passengers directly from the airport terminals or enter certain resort properties. Relying on them for your initial arrival can be complicated and stressful.

This has nothing to do with safety. It has to do with the arrangements that the owners of these large Transportation Monopolies have with the local government. Why do they ALLOW the SHARK TANK to exist? it is easy enough to kick them out. Avoid the “Shark Tank”: When you exit the airport doors, you will be approached by dozens of people offering you a ride. Ignore the aggressive sales pitches and walk directly to your pre-arranged, official transportation provider. Follow the money you find the truth. I have been going to CSL for over 50 years and have seen the changes ... some good .. some bad .. but most things in Mexico always comes down to who pays who.
