Tourists to Los Cabos and surrounding towns visit the area for a vacation getaway from the hassles of everyday life and to enjoy some rest and relaxation time.
The last thing these travelers from afar are hoping for is to get stuck in traffic when trying to get around their beach resort destination.
However, for visitors to La Paz, it is the reality of a long-awaited vacation escape.
Traffic in La Paz
Traffic is a fact of life in La Paz and it is no different for travelers venturing to the capital city of Baja California Sur.
The public works department of La Paz is behind on road improvements. Several streets are closed for long-term road repair and enhancement work. Other streets are unfortunately full of potholes and sinkholes.
The end result is delays for both visitors and locals to La Paz.
Public Works Trying to Catch Up
The good news is that the municipal government recently announced that it is aware of the headaches faced by travelers to the area and is working diligently to resolve the road construction challenges.
The public works department of La Paz has focused on reducing the number of headaches faced by travelers during the peak fall and winter holiday travel season to increase the guest satisfaction of visiting the area.
Several tropical storms hitting the State of Baja California Sur, along with the record tourism the area received this year, has led to the rapid deterioration of the roads.
The expected lifespan of the area roads has unfortunately not been able to keep up with the punishment of tropical weather and increased visitation this year.
La Paz officials are also exploring other options that would decrease overall traffic impacting visitors to the area, including additional signage and increasing safety enforcement of speed limits.
Appealing For Help
La Paz is expected to need to appeal for assistance from both the State of Baja California Sur and the Mexican federal government for funding to improve the roads in the area.
Recently, Los Cabos appealed for emergency assistance after the impact of Hurricane Hillary ruined many of the roads and bridges in the area.
The good news is it appears that emergency funding appears to be available from the State of Baja California Sur to repair roads that have an impact on tourists visiting the region.
The federal government, however, may have less funding due to the emergency response needed for Hurricane Otis, the category five hurricane that essentially destroyed Acapulco.
What Travelers Need to Know
Tourists visiting La Paz as part of their beach vacation getaway to Los Cabos need to expect travel delays when getting around town.
However, they can reduce the impact that the heavy traffic in the state capital has on their vacation getaway by avoiding the peak commute hours for locals around 1pm and 2pm.
La Paz residents will also recommend tourists avoid Forjadores Boulevard, as it is one of the boulevards where visitors will see the most traffic, especially in the mornings.
Until the public works department can get ahead of the road construction needs in La Paz, travelers will need some smart planning ahead to avoid experiencing delays when trying to navigate around the busy parts of the town.
Unfortunately, the traffic should only get worse in La Paz as the peak fall and winter holiday travel season really gets started this week.
Visitors trying to avoid the traffic will find that the most congested areas in La Paz popular are typically those popular with the other travelers on a vacation getaway to the state capital.
