Hurricane Norma slowly but surely made her presence known throughout last week. What started as grey skies and high winds turned into a hurricane by the end of the week.
Fortunately, hotels didn’t see much damage, but the storm wreaked havoc elsewhere from Los Cabos to La Paz, where both cities were declared ‘disaster zones’.
Cleaning crews and other essential workers have done their best to restore basic necessities, such as electricity and water, all while bringing Cabo’s famous beaches back to their pristine conditions.
Many beach destinations all over the globe are prepared for Mother Nature to make an impact, but there’s simply no stopping these powerful storms.
It’s been reported at least 40,000 tourists were affected by the most recent hurricane who chose to ride it out rather than reschedule travel plans.
Those who come to Cabo this week will be rewarded as one of the most popular tourist areas has been fully restored.
Downtown Is Back In Business
Travelers come to Los Cabos for a variety of reasons, but the common denominator is to simply leave your worries at home.
Cabo is one the best destinations to enjoy the ultimate vacation where you can kick back and relax and forget your day-to-day stresses.
One of the most popular tourist areas is downtown Cabo San Lucas. Home to famous bars, such as Cabo Wabo Cantina and Senor Frog’s, this area brings in tons of tourists.
Whether it’s to spend the day shopping, trying new restaurants, or having a wild night out at some of the most lively bars in Mexico, downtown is packed with action.
It was estimated over 200,000 people were affected by power outages in the midst of Hurricane Norma. Some businesses had to close up shop during, and the days after, the storm.
Others were fortunate enough to keep the lights on by power generators, but the good news is downtown is now back in business with 100% restoration.
Finding places to go and sites to see should be no issue this week for tourists. Those who were cooped up in their rooms should be thrilled to go out, especially since alcohol sales were limited during the storm as well.
Downtown Had Minimal Damage
Everyone in Los Cabos was on alert when the impending storm was on its way, yet nobody ever knew for sure how much damage to expect.
Downtown lucked out this time with minimal damage being reported, which is why it has so quickly been restored.
Unlike other areas where major flooding and severe damage took place, downtown is back to welcoming visitors with open arms for food, shopping, and entertainment.
“We have already finished the recovery, after the hurricane we began the rehabilitation and cleaning of the center. The center has several shortcomings, but we are going little by little with cleanliness and light; which was the most important thing for us. The reactivation is going little by little, we do not have that much damage .”
– President Robin Hernández of the Association of Professionals and Business Leaders
Concerns Over Food Safety
With water and power being iffy this past week, the State shut down street food vendors due to potential health concerns, putting even more businesses on pause.
The city’s infrastructure couldn’t handle the strength of the storm, not only knocking out power and water services but the sewage system was overwhelmed as well.
A combination of all of the above gave reason for concern over the sanitation of food being served in certain areas.
Downtown was hit hard by the storm and is home to many of the top restaurants and bars in Los Cabos.
However, since many had backup generators and were more equipped than street vendors, there are no reports of restaurants being shut down over these concerns in the downtown area.
Now that downtown has been declared back to normal, tourists shouldn’t have any major concerns over the food they consume here.
