For many years, travelers heading south of the border to Mexico have had safety concerns. This is largely in part from mainstream news spreading like wildfire.

Oftentimes, these stories do not reflect the country as a whole or even the region. However, there is enough data gathered by the U.S. State Department to release a travel advisory to Mexico this week.

Mexico has so many gems to check off your travel list. Tourists are mostly unaffected in terms of crime.

But when travel advisories are released, it’s important to grasp the full picture rather than take a snippet and run with it.

Was Cabo Named In New Travel Advisory?

At first glance, looking at the new warning issued on August 22, not a whole lot has changed. Many of the areas considered unsafe remain that way.

On the flipside, the safer destinations are still considered safe. What was added are more intricate details about certain areas.

Rather than issue warnings for the entire country, the State Department issues them by Mexican state. In fact, there is a color-coded map to determine safety, very comparable to Cabo’s beach flag system.

Some of the State Department’s top concerns for tourists in Mexico are:

  • Homicide
  • Kidnapping
  • Carjacking
  • Robbery

But these instances, although possible, are highly unlikely in the state of Baja California Sur. No concerning news was added to this region home to one of Mexico’s premiere getaways – Los Cabos.

Los Cabos Remains At Level 2

In Summary, the U.S. State Department ranks countries with 4 levels of safety:

  • Level 1 – Heed normal precautions
  • Level 2 – Heed increased cautions
  • Level 3 – Reconsider your trip
  • Level 4 – Do not visit

Los Cabos remains at Level 2, comparable to many other top destinations around the globe, such as Italy, France and Turkey.

In other words, there has been no real change to the safety status of not only Los Cabos but the entire state as a whole.

There is no major news to deter you from booking your dream vacation to explore the awesome beaches or charming small towns.

There are no travel restrictions in place, so it’s entirely safe to roam around as you please or stay put at one of the many ritzy resorts.

Resorts Are Super Safe

Mexico’s tourism industry has been booming all year long. One of the main draws is being able to escape your worries at home and relax at a luxury beachfront resort.

Whether it’s Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, or Los Cabos, your perfect vacation should not be interrupted for safety reasons at a resort.

In fact, staying at Mexico’s resorts is one of the safest ways to experience a Mexican vacation. Los Cabos being one of the major resort destinations in all of North America, visitors should feel completely safe here.

All of Mexico’s popular beach destinations have invested in tourists’ safety, whether it’s bringing in the military, trained security officers, more police or installing more security cameras.

Los Cabos is no different, especially at resorts. The economy thrives on tourism, so it’s highly important for guests to not only feel safe but be safe.

While some travelers choose to lounge at the resort the whole trip, others may want to go off and see the sites.

Booking an excursion directly from the resort is often the safest way to avoid petty crime and scams.

What To Avoid In Cabo To Remain Safe

Sure, there are bad apples everywhere. Tourists in Cabo remain largely unaffected by crime, but that is never a guarantee.

Being a party destination, having an extra sense of awareness wandering the streets late at night will help to avoid running into trouble.

However, the most unsafe places for tourists right now are some of Cabo’s beaches. No, it’s not due to criminal activity.

Some of Cabo’s beaches are still recovering from the recent hurricane, so many beaches are still restricted to tourists.

With drownings being reported what seems like every week, tourists should pay close attention to Cabo’s beach flags to know which beaches are safe.
