If you are traveling to Los Cabos next week, you are about to experience the loudest, fastest, and most thrilling event the Baja peninsula has to offer. The legendary SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race is officially coming to town.
Running from November 9 through November 15, the 59th edition of this world-famous desert race is making history. For the very first time, the entire event—including both the starting line and the grand finish line—will be hosted in San José del Cabo. This means the usually quiet, cultural hub of the municipality is about to be completely taken over by massive trophy trucks, professional racing teams, and an estimated 20,000 hardcore racing fans.

Experiencing the Baja 1000 in person is incredible, but standing inches away from a 6,000-pound truck flying through the desert at 100 mph is also inherently dangerous. Here is exactly what the local government is planning, where the crowds will be, and how you can safely watch the action unfold.
The Historic San José del Cabo Takeover
Because this is the first time San José del Cabo is hosting both ends of the race, the local infrastructure is bracing for a massive impact. According to SCORE International and local authorities, over 60 different hotels across Los Cabos have been transformed into official operations centers just to house the competing teams, their mechanics, and their massive fleets of chase vehicles.
For fans, the action kicks off before the race even starts. If you want to get up close to the multi-million dollar trophy trucks and meet the drivers, you need to attend the mechanical inspections (the contingency row). These massive block parties are scheduled for Wednesday, November 11 and Thursday, November 12.

The official starting line for the race will be located on Centenario Boulevard in San José del Cabo. The Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection anticipates that the starting line and the contingency days will easily draw over 20,000 spectators, making them the most crowded events of the entire week.
The Massive Security Operation
To handle the massive influx of fans and extremely dangerous high-speed vehicles, Los Cabos is launching an unprecedented security operation.
Diego Camacho Hale, the acting head of Civil Protection, confirmed that a massive, multi-agency command center is being established to monitor the entire event. The operation will include 100 Civil Protection agents, 40 dedicated ambulances, fire units, and heavy support from the Mexican Navy and the National Defense Secretariat.

Because the race course cuts directly through the wild Baja backcountry, authorities are completely locking down access to certain vulnerable areas. If you were planning to hike or camp in the Sierra de la Laguna mountains next week, you need to change your plans, as access to the area will be heavily restricted to keep civilians off the active race course.
The Safest Way to Watch the Race
Off-road racing is deeply embedded in the culture of Baja California Sur, but every year, tourists and locals put themselves in extreme danger by standing too close to the track.
If you want to watch the trucks fly through the dirt, Camacho Hale and the Civil Protection team are urging spectators to follow one massive rule: Avoid the curves. Do not stand on the outside or inside of a dirt corner, as this is where trucks are most likely to slide out of control or kick up massive, dangerous rocks.

To provide a safe viewing experience, Civil Protection is actively working with SCORE organizers to build a designated spectator “ramp zone” down in the San José Arroyo (the dry riverbed). This controlled area will feature specially constructed jumps, allowing fans to safely watch the trophy trucks launch into the air from behind secure barricades. This setup is designed to replicate the highly successful, controlled spectator zones used up north in Ensenada.
If you want to experience the adrenaline of the Baja 1000 without putting yourself in harm’s way, stick to the designated spectator zone in the San José Arroyo, or enjoy the massive crowds and live music at the starting line on Centenario Boulevard.
