There is a highly specific moment of pure panic that happens every single day at Los Cabos International Airport. You have just grabbed your luggage off the baggage carousel. You are walking toward the sliding glass exit doors, incredibly excited for your very first vacation margarita. Then, you see it right in front of you. The mandatory Customs checkpoint. You press the button. It turns red.
Suddenly, a uniformed officer is opening your carefully packed suitcase, pulling out your personal items, and telling you that you owe a massive three hundred dollar fine. Even worse, your belongings are being actively confiscated right in front of you.

Here at The Cabo Sun, we see this exact scenario play out constantly. Travelers just assume that because they are on a fun tropical vacation, the local rules are totally relaxed. They absolutely are not. Mexican customs officers are incredibly strict, highly efficient, and they know exactly what to look for when they search a bag. To save you from a massive financial fine or a terrifying delay at the airport, you need to check your bags right now. Here are the five items you should absolutely leave at home for your winter getaway so you can get to that margarita at your resort fast!
1. Vapes And Electronic Cigarettes

This is currently the number one way tourists get into serious trouble at the airport. In Mexico, it is completely illegal to import electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and liquid cartridges. It absolutely does not matter if the device is just for your own personal use on the beach. It also does not matter if you have a medical prescription from your doctor back home. The nationwide ban is incredibly strict and actively enforced at the border.
- The Reality: If you have a vape in your carry on or your checked bag, and you get searched, it will be confiscated immediately. In many cases, officers will also levy a heavy financial fine on the spot. Do not risk bringing it.
2. Sudafed And Pseudoephedrine

You might pack a basic box of cold medicine for a head cold without thinking twice about it. Do not make this careless mistake. Pseudoephedrine, which is the highly active ingredient in brand name Sudafed, is a strictly controlled substance in Mexico. This is because the chemical is actively used to manufacture methamphetamine. Bringing it across the border into the country is technically considered drug trafficking by local authorities.
- The Fix: Check your cold medicine labels carefully. If the box contains pseudoephedrine, leave it at home. Phenylephrine based decongestants are generally fine, but keeping them in their original factory packaging is essential.
3. Fresh Food And The Snack Bag Trap

You packed a fresh apple for the long flight and simply forgot to eat it. Or maybe you brought a large bag of beef jerky to snack on in your hotel room. The absolute rule is that you cannot bring any fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, or meat products into Mexico. The official agriculture inspectors, known as SENASICA, have highly trained dogs walking around baggage claim specifically to smell these exact items.
- The Trap: If a friendly beagle sits directly next to your bag, you are about to lose your snacks and potentially pay a massive fine. Pack processed, sealed snacks like granola bars or potato chips instead.
4. Undeclared Cash Over Ten Thousand Dollars

To be absolutely clear, it is not illegal to bring more than ten thousand United States dollars on your vacation. But it is highly illegal not to declare it on your official customs forms. If you are traveling as a family unit and you are carrying eleven thousand dollars in cash between you, you must fill out the paperwork. Customs agents will count your cash if they find a large stack in your wallet.
- The Consequence: If you do not declare the cash and they find it during a search, they can completely seize the money. It is assumed to be illegal funds until you can legally prove otherwise. It is significantly safer and easier to just use the local ATMs in Cabo.
5. Excess Cigarettes And The Carton Trap

This is a classic duty free shopping mistake that catches veteran travelers off guard. Mexico legally allows you to bring in exactly ten packs of cigarettes, which equals two hundred total cigarettes, or twenty five cigars completely duty free. Many warehouse or airport duty free cartons sold in the United States contain significantly more than ten packs. If you bring a mega carton, you are officially over the legal import limit.
- The Fine: You will be charged a massive import tax on every single cigarette over the limit. This penalty is often up to six hundred percent of the actual value of the product. It is significantly cheaper to just buy them at the local convenience store in Cabo.
The Verdict: The dreaded red light button at the customs checkpoint might be completely random, but the actual rules are not. Scan your bag thoroughly before you ever leave for the airport. If you find a vape, a fresh apple, or a box of Sudafed, toss it out immediately. It is always cheaper to buy a replacement item in Cabo than to pay a massive fine at the border.

An important note on electronics:
If you are planning a working vacation, you need to be incredibly careful with the amount of tech you pack in your carry on bag. Mexican customs enforces a highly strict limit on personal electronics, and travelers are routinely getting slapped with massive taxes just for bringing both a personal and a work computer. To be completely safe and avoid a massive financial penalty at the border, you must stick to the strict legal limit of one laptop, one tablet like an iPad, and your personal cell phone per traveler, and absolutely no more. If agents find a second laptop in your luggage, they will instantly flag it as a commercial good and can charge you a massive import tax based on the total estimated value of the extra device before they let you leave the airport.
