When my wife Liz and I fly down from Louisville for a Baja getaway in the fall and winter, the shift in the weather is instantly noticeable. The blistering late-summer heat finally breaks, the humidity drops, and the evenings carry a crisp breeze. It’s the perfect time of year for a romantic couples trip to the peninsula.
While it’s tempting to check into a luxury adults-only resort on the Tourist Corridor and never leave the infinity pool, doing so means missing out on the true magic of the region. The energy of the Cabo San Lucas Marina is fantastic, but true romance is often found slightly off the beaten path. Renting a car for the day and exploring the surrounding coastal towns and hidden mountain oases provides a completely different, highly authentic Mexican experience.
If you are planning a couples trip to the region this season, here are 5 incredibly romantic day trips you need to add to your itinerary.
1. Todos Santos: The Artistic Pacific Escape

About an hour north of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific coast sits the stunning Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) of Todos Santos. This is our absolute favorite day trip. The historic downtown is compact, highly walkable, and completely saturated with colorful art galleries, boutique shops, and centuries-old brick architecture.
It moves at a fraction of the speed of Cabo. You can spend the late morning wandering the cobblestone streets, picking up unique local art, and enjoying incredible farm-to-table lunches. When the afternoon rolls around, take a quick drive over to Playa Los Cerritos for a barefoot walk on the sand.
Finally, you absolutely must end the day by grabbing a table right on the beach at The Green Room. Watching the sun sink directly into the Pacific Ocean while splitting fresh seafood tostadas with your partner is an unmatched romantic experience.
2. San José del Cabo: The Farm-to-Table & Art Walk Experience

If you want a romantic evening out but do not want to drive too far, simply head to the eastern edge of the Tourist Corridor to San José del Cabo. While Cabo San Lucas is the hub for nightlife, San José is its sophisticated, romantic older sibling.
If you are visiting between November and June, you have to plan this trip for a Thursday evening. Every Thursday, the historic Gallery District completely shuts down to vehicular traffic for the famous Art Walk. You and your partner can stroll hand-in-hand down the charming streets, sipping wine and hopping between open-door art exhibits featuring incredible regional talent.
Before the Art Walk, head slightly inland into the foothills to experience the region’s legendary farm-to-table culinary scene. Securing a sunset dinner reservation under the string lights at Flora Farms or Acre is the ultimate Cabo date night.
3. La Paz: The Tranquil Waterfront Capital

If you are willing to drive two hours north, the capital city of Baja California Sur offers a quiet, highly romantic alternative to the southern resorts. La Paz sits directly on the Sea of Cortez, and the water here is exceptionally calm, shallow, and crystal clear.
The centerpiece of the city is the Malecon, a spectacular, miles-long paved boardwalk that hugs the ocean. Renting a pair of bicycles and cruising along the water at sunset is incredibly peaceful. During the day, you can pack a picnic and drive out to Balandra Beach—widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Mexico—to wade through the shallow turquoise bays. If you are visiting later in the winter, you can even book a private boat charter to swim alongside the majestic whale sharks that migrate into the bay.
4. Santiago and Fox Canyon: The Hidden Desert Oasis

For active couples who love the outdoors, trading the beach for the mountains is an incredible, unexpected romantic adventure. Just an hour north of San José del Cabo sits the small, sleepy town of Santiago. This town serves as the gateway to the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range.
Tucked into these arid mountains are lush, hidden desert oases. You can hike the trails through Fox Canyon (Cañon de la Zorra) until you reach the Sol de Mayo waterfall. Stripping off your hiking boots and swimming together in the cool, clear plunge pool beneath the cascading water feels like discovering a secret world. Afterward, you can take a short drive over to the Santa Rita Hot Springs to soak in the natural, warm mineral waters surrounded by giant granite boulders and palm trees.
5. The East Cape: The Remote Beach Hideaway

Sometimes, the most romantic thing you can do is completely unplug and get away from the crowds. The East Cape is a rugged, relatively undeveloped stretch of coastline that runs north from San José del Cabo toward the Sea of Cortez.
The paved roads quickly give way to dirt tracks, so you will want to rent a proper SUV. What you get in return for the bumpy ride is pure, deserted paradise. The East Cape is defined by wide, white-sand beaches with virtually no people in sight. You can pack a cooler, find an empty cove, and have an entire beach completely to yourselves for the day. If you keep driving, you will reach the Cabo Pulmo National Park, a protected marine sanctuary that offers some of the absolute best, most vibrant snorkeling in North America.
Los Cabos is spectacular, but getting out of the resort bubble and exploring the wider Baja peninsula is where the truly unforgettable memories are made.
